You may get hammered by the photography 'purists' tastes that usually seems to dominate, but personally, I like this shot a lot. Focus is good, the 'eerie' effect works well IMO for this image and this challenge. I find it a stimulating, creative composition, and the looks on their faces are great. There is a little bit of harsh light/glare on the center child, especially the forehead, but it seems only to be a minor distraction. Heck, the longer I look, the more I like it. NIce job. | Photographer found comment helpful. |

| 06/19/2005 02:20:42 PM | Future Lostby ilwilComment: Very emotive photo. Fits the challenge great IMO. I love your attention to detail in this shot. Everything present adds to the story, the photo album, the booze, the tissue in the hand(very nice touch), the bear, the tears, the rain...just excellant. Great expression on the model. The composition is strong. I'm really left feeling a connection, and wondering what problems are haunting this woman, and wishing I could help her in some way. Awesome job, this is one of my favorites of the field. | Photographer found comment helpful. |
| 06/19/2005 02:11:45 PM | Frog Aloneby bffatwComment: Maybe I'm missing something, but I'm not understanding the connection of a frog to the darkness challenge. In this case, I'm not finding that the centered composition works well. Perhaps placing your subject at a rule of thirds intersection would help. The subject (frog) is also kind of small in the frame. The background doesn't seem to contribute much to the image, you could try filling the frame more with the subject, or if that is beyond your camera's capability for such a small subject, try finding a larger subject to shoot. | Photographer found comment helpful. |
| 06/19/2005 02:03:17 PM | Sorcerer by labudsComment: This is a great idea, executed pretty well. Unlike some of the light painting shots in the challenge that seem not well thought out, very random, this shot looks well planned and compositionally strong. This works well, I'm wondering though if the person were just a little more prominent (not much) in the shot it might be an even stronger presentation? Nice shot. |
| 06/19/2005 01:57:58 PM | On alcohol at night... Finding my way home?!?by ApeeComment: Although I find this a great concept, it seems to me to be compositionally weak. Looks very random and not thought out to me. I think this could be a great image, with maybe some s curves or something more stimulating. | Photographer found comment helpful. |

| 06/18/2005 02:49:17 AM | Dark Tripby parrotheadComment: I like this photo. Very emotive to me. Some voters may hammer it, but I can see the connection and think it fits the challenge well. The people in the background works ok, adds some context to the image, but one minor nitpick- I wish the main subject's foot was not cut off at the bottom of the photo. Nice shot. | Photographer found comment helpful. |
| 06/18/2005 02:38:25 AM | Contemplativeby charliebakerComment: This is a nice idea. I think compositionally, the photo perhaps would be stronger if a majority of either the top or bottom were cropped out, placing the subject near the top or bottom edge of the image. | Photographer found comment helpful. |
| 06/17/2005 04:51:36 AM | Nearing Darkby pirate_mafiaComment: I think a shot like this has potential but in this case it is not moving me. There seems to be a lack of any real detail. If the light were not so blown out, it might provide a strong focal point, but as is, I'm not finding any real anchor of interest to draw me into the photo and make a connection. Sometimes in an image like this, composing with a tree, or building, or person, something even in silhouette can really add a lot. |
