hm, this looks like it used a technique i've found quite interesting-
don't know if this is what you did, but i've done it a few times-
duplicate layer
dupe to B/W
copy B/W
invert top B/W layer
change overlay mode to "Hard Mix"
add slight gaussian blur to hard mix layer
merge B/W layers
change B/W layer overlay mode to "Multiply" or "Overlay"

--except when I do it, it's mostly just a "hey, this is nifty" kind of thing; here you've made the grittyness and ultra-detail-enhancement really work. the eyes especially are great.
