The Splash

It's a cliche to say it's all about the light, but here it's what immediately catches my attention. The frolicking dogs, the minimal but handsome scenery and the looming sky are all enough to make this a fine image. Then the light, soft and enchanting, imbues the scene with the intimacy of a stage set. The joy of the dogs, the splash, complete this idyllic moment. Wonderful. I'm only left wondering about that ring of water and pillar of droplets off to the side.

A terrific image, busy yet spare, and I'm gathering that there's deep sadness in this woman. There's sympathy and empathy in her portrayal. Her placement at the edge of the photograph, bustling street life in the background, emphasizes her marginal situation. Yet her jacket flashes in the light. Black and white helps make this real. I have a feeling that this is not so much a defining moment as a descent.
