Meltby LucidLotusComment: Hi LucidLotus,
Marvelous idea with ice. What one can do with a little imagination very nice. A little more DOF would have brought you a more balanced focus though the entire photo. Seems to be a touch under exposed but then again you might have blown out the top cubes a tuff call there. Nice use of lighting. Try using a card board box about 24 to 36" away using a slave and bounce the flash off the inside of the box. The box would soften the light and give you a nice soft balance thro-out the photo including the bottom. You would have to experiment with the flash settings but I think you would be pleasently suprized. You may even get a little twinkle from a few of the cubes. Over all a very nice job of a not so easy subject. Cubes from the freezer tend to have air bubbles and freeze in irregular patterns presenting a whole different set of problems from there buddies outdoors. Well done. |

Quabbin Resevoirby amsmythComment: Hi,
From a compositional stand point I see several problems. First off the right side of the photo leaves the viewer with a feeling of emptyness. There is nothing there. We have know way of knowing what is there. Are there trees, rocks, snow or does the world come to and end ?.
A piece of land jutting out, a building or a damn would have helped tremendously here. The sky is absolutly usless here there is nothing that has any benefit to the photo at all. I would have cropped it down to about 1/2 to 1" of the mountain tops giving it a more panoramic look. The expanse of water is missing something also, maybe a boat or water fowl giving the photo a sense of depth would have been a great help. The lower third of the photo needs something to give the entire photo some sort of scale the weeds do little here a tree in the lower left hand corner would have been nice. Over all it looks like the photographer here tried to do to much with the equipment he or she had on hand. My advice, Learn the limitations of your equipment and stay within them. |
