| 06/02/2005 12:22:20 AM | "Glory be to God for dappled things..."by datcatComment: Beauty is a subjective thing, I know. In my scoring and comments I'm trying to score based on NOT whether or not I would think a particular subject beautiful, but on whether the photographer has succeeded in creating a beautiful photo. I look for the elements of color, lines, focus and dof interest, lighting, and a certain element of grace and lovlieness. I'm looking for a unique and creative appeal for the highest scorers. The description says to create a photo that makes the viewer think "that's beautiful", so it will undoubtedly be very subjective. (This is what I'm putting at the start of all of my comments, and I hope it is helpful.)
That being said, Nice kitty close up! I wonder what they're looking at? I think this is a nice photo of them, but doesn't have the "wow" factor for me. Perhaps one of these guys looking straight at the camera would have done better. | Photographer found comment helpful. |

That being said, This is a nice nature photo, but it doesn't make me think "beauty." The clarity and colors are good, but it doesn't have a real unique or creative quality to it. | Photographer found comment helpful. |

That being said, I like the creativity shown here. In this instance, I also think the selective desat works. In looking at this photo, my first thought is not "beauty", however. It's clever and the technical aspects are okay, but the idea doesn't really strike a chord with me in regards to beauty. Still a fairly high score based on the photo's merits. | Photographer found comment helpful. |

That being said, this is an interesting plant I've not seen before. Colors are great, but I don't like the composition or dof all that much. Having the out of focus selections so prominent, and having the focused one partly covered - just doesn't add anything to the shot imo. I think the biggest drawback to my eye, is the large one in front on the left that really seems to take over and it makes the composition very unbalanced in my view. | Photographer found comment helpful. |

That being said, I've looked at this a few times trying to decide if I like the processing or not. I think I do. I'm sure others will argue that opinion. You've taken a relatively basic scene and created a nice "mood". I don't really care that much for the tone or the border. I do like the "glow" effect here. I think your title adds to this particular shot as well. | Photographer found comment helpful. |

That being said, certainly a child meets the challenge for beauty. I personally don't like the selective desat here. Why empahsize the flower and earring? I beleive the soft focus was intentional, but I would have liked more clarity on the eyes. I also don't care for the mouth position and overall expression. It's a cute girl and I like the b/w but those elements bring the otherwise nice portrait down a few notches for me. |

That being said, you picked a beautifu spot for the photo. Technically it's a well done shot, I think. Although, I think it would look better with the foreground rocks darkened some and if the cloud whites weren't blown out quite as much. Still a very pretty setting, and nice composition. It does make me think "beauty." It doesn't, however, make me go "wow". Not a unique or creative take on the challenge, but a nice photo anyway. Oh...and I really like borders, but I think this one overpowers the scene a bit. | Photographer found comment helpful. |

That being said, this is a cool shot. You ahve picked the perfect time of day to bring out the beauty of the scene. I'm not sure about the tree. I can't decide if it really adds anything to the photo. I think maybe I would like it better without the tree if there would be a different place that would work for that. However, even with the tree this is very nice. I wish the colors were just a bit richer in tone. I like the curves and shadows a lot. Good job. | Photographer found comment helpful. |

That being said, this has a lot going for it. Wonderful composition IMO, with the hills, reflections, bird on the beach and lots of sky. The colors really make this scene. Not perhaps the most creative or unique photo for beauty, but I think it's very well done. | Photographer found comment helpful. |

That being said, you have a cute subject here! Definitely on the prowl! The photo itself seems out of focus and more like a hurried click than a real attempt to create and convey beauty. | Photographer found comment helpful. |
