Greetings from the Critique Club

Oh, I'm so pleased to have the chance to look at this image again. I do remember it very well from the Challenge and marveled then (and now) at the perserverence of the cyclist.

You caught the moment well and used the 'desaturation' theme well when you laid all the emphasis of the image on the athlete. The encouragement of the bike rider beside him is well captured.

Why didn't it score higher? Who's to know. Sometimes these things just work out that way.

It's a good image that tells a good story.

Um, this one is a toughy to critique. As far as it goes, it's a nice B&W image with good black and white gradations, but when confronted with the Challenge title, I did think the desaturation was a bit subtle.

I suppose it was mine, I'd have given ol' Jacob a few more flowers and more colorful ones. poor fellow, he didn't even make it to his 21st birthday.

Anyhow, you got dinged by your subtle image and that doesn't happen very often to you.

Continued success in your DPC experience.

Yes, the British have some fabulous museums in London, don't they. (I usually head for the Nat'l Gallery and the Tate)

You've captured a remarkable juxtaposition of eras, shapes and tones in one image. Still, your composition is quiet enough so that the viewer is not confused by all the information. That's probably why you scored so well in this difficult Challenge.

So, I'll say "congratulations" on a fine image and I'm delighted to have had the chance to view it again.

Welcome to DPC. I see this is just your fourth entry in a Challenge!

I liked your approach with the black and white image to give the bridge that 'old time' quality. The voters liked your image quite well, but it probably just didn't have that extra 'pop' that would give it a high score. Still, it worked well for the Challenge. One of your commenters said a different crop might have improved the image. I don't know it if would actually improve the iamge, but I also like the idea of moving the crop in towards the main attraction - the bridge. It would, I think, center the interest of the viewer.

All in all, though, a good image that scored well, and met the challenge.

I'll be looking forward to seeing more of your work in future Challenges.

Greetings from the Critique Club

I see you are fairly new to DPC and are settling in nicely. Terrific.

When I first saw this iamge, I thought, wow, what an attractive model and expressive eyes. Then I went to the umbrella and finally to the scarf, which was, I think the main focus of your composition. This image almost works. (If it was mine, I'd be happy!) Nevertheless, there were some minor problems that come to mind.

Yes, I also think the umbrella is a tad 'heavy' for the composition. But if used, perhaps the model doesn't need to be holding the handle. Then, there is a little red x at the lower left that might be better out of there. I'm gonna really nit pic and say the tag on the model's scarf should go away. And finally, there's something about the model's dress, especially around the waistline that gives the appearance of being wrinkled.

I'm really being nit picky about a really good image, because overall I think you have an excellent start here.

So, keep 'em coming and I wish you much luck in your future photography. You really are good at this.

I always like to see this style of image. You've got to go out on a dark night, set up a tripod and hope the traffic flow will give you a good pattern of light. And you really can't check until you get back home! Then too, you probably have to take some care not to get run over.

All that in mind, there you were. I have an idea that if your road had been more interesting, say with a curve in it, you would have scored better. And, yes, as one of your commenters said, that cluster of lights at the vanishing point was a problem, as the vanishing point was obscured, and slightly fuzzy.

But it's a good start, and I expect you'll be out there on another road one of these days, trying again.

Keep 'em coming!
