GREETINGS FROM THE CRITIQUE CLUB
Your first entry! Where will you be with your NEXT entry...in ribbon territory?
I see you've actually been around DPC for quite a while, probably dropping in once in a while to keep track of things. I'm so glad you decided to actually send in an entry this time. And hope you continue this trend.
Of course this image is just splendid in all sorts of ways including that little speck of sunlight to the left at the tower that puts the coda to the highlights to the right. Since there is nothing, really, to critique in this image, I'd best move on to the next image in the queue.
It's obvious that you know your way around a camera, and I'm one of those who will look forward to seeing more of your work now that you've gotten underway.

You was robbed! Seriously, I enjoyed your image during voting and felt lucky to get it again in the Critique Queue just now. It certainly meets the Challenge, is well composed and seen and is technically well done.
Was the answer to your sort-of-middling score in Luci11e's observation when she commented:
nice perspective - I really had to study this image to see what I was looking at
It is unfortunate that our viewer/voters sometimes just don't take the time to LOOK. Still, while your image didn't make the front page, it did engender some very positive feedback. You are not afraid to step out on a limb to get a good shot. It shows nicely in your work.
I look forward to seeing more of your images in the queue and hope this small critique was helpful to you.

Oh, sometimes I sigh a little at our voters. Yes, there are some technical issues, but still... It is a cute idea and your colors are excellent. It is not easy to get those whites white, and still have good definition, and you did it. The tissue box is well exposed and the subject does meet the Challenge. (Although it possibly would have been better to have the 'count' visible on the box, rather than depending on the title.)
When I look on my monitor(s) I do notice that your box is resting on a not-quite-as-black surface as the backdrop. Monitors are tricky, and with blacks, it's important to double check that everything is the color you want it to be. While I think you probably thought it was all going to be the same tone of black, it might also be fun to experiment with a different color to the image doesn't appear to be floating in space. Just a thought, of course, because it's your decision all the way.
Good luck in your future entries. I do look forward to seeing them and I hope this small critique is helpful to you.

welcome to DPC! Your second entry, and hey, you broke the 5 barrier. Not bad, Alex.
The glee, the exuberance, the sheer fun of this entry entranced our viewer/voters. You comments show this. If you two didn't collapse into a gaggle of giggles after the shoot, I would be surprised.
congratulations on getting your model in pretty good focus in mid-air. Not easy, my friend. Then, I suppose we have to discuss the surroundings. The hot spots, like the lamp & the bedding really have to be handled carefully to take this fun photo out of the snapshot category.
So, my thoughts on this would be to consider your surroundings with care, in this case perhaps remove the lamp from camera view & use dark foreground fabric.
You are telling a story in one photo.
I rather think you will be very good at it when you have a few more technicals under your belt so keep 'em coming.
I hope this little critique is helpful to you.

Hello! It is my turn to say "Welcome to DPC." I see you have only been a member for a few months and already you have a ribbon! Congratulations.
Also, I salute your courage in getting out on a windy night, setting up a tripod and working hard to find an image for this Perspective Challenge. Had it been raining as well? Anyhow, I think that if you had gone for a longer exposure, your tripod would have had wind movement and the subject might be blurry.
In any event, your comments tell you that your image is quite dark. Actually, it is dark and mysterious. Oh, for a hooded figure in the foreground to add to the mystery. Had you converted this to black & white, you certainly could have made it more readable, but then you would have lost the mystery.
So, about all I can say is: "Good Try!" This one didn't work for the viewer/voters but your next one might.
Keep 'em coming. I h ope this little critique was helpful to you.

What an interesting photograph you have produced. After reading your comments i am very intrigued by the range of emotion you engendered here. Congratulations! That's not easy to do.
Indeed it is a fine example of perspective and suits the Challenge perfectly. It is 'artistic' rather than a record shot; that is you have interpreted the scene in your own way and style. Nice. I'm not sure why the boy seems almost cut out in the frame. He seems to have a little white halo all around him. Whatever happened there, possibly in post-processing, it works for the story you present. But it may have had something to do with the somewhat average score your image received.
Hard to tell if this would have worked as well with a lighter sky. But that could be one alternative. In any event, this is a good image that obviously worked exactly the way you wanted it to and it received some nice reviews.
You've been involved with DPC for just a few months now, and obviously you are enjoying your participation in the site. I very much appreciated the look at your portfolio.
Best of luck to you in the future!

Okay! I am so pleased that this image came up when it was my turn to draw an image from the Critique queue. I enjoyed it in the Challenge and now get to enjoy it again.
You interpreted the gracefulness of the sculpture well and the angle you selected was perfect for the Challenge. If it was mine, I would probably crop out more of the sky (not a lot, just some) to concentrate the action on the figures while still leaving room for them to leap/dance.
On compression issues, my only suggestion would be to set you camera on "Large" or if you can process it, "Raw" so that you collect the most pixels possible. Then when resizing for the web, hang on to as many pixels as you can. I think there is a pretty good tutorial on DPC telling how to resize if you're unsure.
As far as monitors go, yes, it is important to check your work on as many monitors as you have access to. They DO vary enormously, and of course your viewers have an infinite variety.
In any event, congratulations on your personal best, and your steady climb up the scoring ladder. Pretty soon you'll be in ribbon territory if you keep going at this rate.
Take care!
Alice
