What strikes me most in this essay is the universality of the experience you've conveyed. Without knowing it was Taiwan, I might imagine this slow-water village to be in several possible locales. The cultural context is ambiguous, and so, the essay speaks about something other than where, revealing a broader view of human experience.

Beyond that ethereal commentary, it's also a series of engaging images, composed, sequenced and processed to create a coherent story, and to provide a sense of place. Thanks for sharing this!

I've been through your essay several times over several days, Clive. It's compelling and evokes strong emotions and memories for me. In my adolescent years, there was a wash that passed from a culvert near the Pacific under the coast highway to an outflow at the shore. Most of the time the outflow was backed up and the smells of the stagnant water were overpowering. Yet, this was the only safe way to cross under the busy highway to the beach. We locals referred to it as the "Polio Pit." Despite the stench and dark, dank atmosphere, it too was a place of mystique and sketchy activity.

Thanks for your essay, which on its own is a remarkable set of poetry, images, memories and emotional exposition. I would say I really enjoyed it, but the past tense of that statement is inaccurate. It's lodged in my head for the time being. I expect to revisit it several more times at least. I echo the praise of the those who have commented earlier - Canal 118 is a powerful work.
