Time to Flyby SandyPComment: Lovely interactive image between parent and chick. Enough natural environment in the crop and the chick's pose and both pleading eyes visible is arguably what gives this shot something more than the norm. Certainly a trait I think NG looks for. It does appear a bit OOF or slowish s/s caused some blur, lack of crispness, but is that cause for non-acceptance by NG? Debatable. My gut feel is they prefer sharp, but not always... |

Bambiby JooolsComment: With the Deer in the shade and full sunlight in the background has made even exposure very difficult. This also shows the heavy CA of the lens in the high contrast areas, such as the deer's rump and the light green field behind it, and the edges of the antlers. However, it's one of the few images of deer where it is actually engaging the reader however. I'm not convinced it would be used, sorry. |

A mother keeps watchby AbraComment: I like the backlight and the wary body language. Tricky light to get a decent overall exposure and decent s/s thus it looks a tad wobbled. I'm on the fence if it would be used or not. Would have to relate to an article I think for it to be considered. |

About to calveby optixComment: Without a dramatic splash the image, whilst being in a difficult and cold location and the effort to get here immense, is rather flat. It's not yet telling a compelling story such as global warming. Maybe a minute later it did but your ship had moved on. Some ice fell, and I'm sure it was a moment you will never forget but what's being shown is just too little to be momentous in the picture. NG photography to me is all about a new angle, a moment, a feeling, something thought provoking or a picture to back up the article and I don't think this has enough of that to be accepted. 'Calve' to me is to give birth to a calf. No doubt I'm not the first to point this out. Did you mean 'About to cave in'?
ETA Post Rollover: OK I'm an ass and I learnt something new today. Apologies for the "Calve" Faux Pas. I did look it up but totally missed it. Message edited by author 2011-07-09 17:20:54. |

Bridge viewby hajekaComment: Your image is fairly well exposed, looks level and has a number of elements to look at and enjoy. However is it engaging enough? Does it draw me in and tell a story? Without the benefit of text to tie it in to something I'd have to say this is a record shot only and may not reach publication, sorry. |

forest habitatby Kevin_FlynnComment: Beautiful work. Natural shot in natural environs. Nice light accentuation on the antlers and good exposure, DOF. There needs to be some engagement between the subject and the viewer, of which there is none. The border is common at DPC but not NG except where only one black frame is used generally at the bottom of the image for text. I was in two minds to frame my entry but chose not to. There's a fair amount of CA in the lens visible at the tip/edges of the antlers and the vertical neckline., i.e. at the areas of most contrast. Not an image killer per se but it does irritate any nature tog if the lens portrays these characteristics as all your shots will have this blemish/lens flaw. Whilst I'm not of the opinion that a catchlight in the eye is required, I've found this to be the consensus online. Yours doesn't have one. Publishable? Fair chance, if tied into the text. |

At the Fallsby davidwComment: As before, I'd prefer to a see a steam train go over it :)
It's great. The slow shutter speed has naturally done wonders to this, the movement in the tourists, the soft curtain of water. As the subject of a story it could well be published but would need supporting text. |

Birdby ladpupmoeComment: Whilst it's 'close' I fear you have over cropped and in so doing lost definition, focus, sharpness. It's also OE. NG also tend to name the subject in question, by common and scientific names or at least give some explanation about the shot. It's unlikely this image would be published unless it's a one of a kind, never seen before bird, and this is the only picture they got of it deep in some Amazonian jungle. |

Whites Tree Frogby hazelmayComment: Appealing image. Down to the bits of muck on the body. The huge OOF area to bottom right is distracting. If possible crop higher with more black above it's head and less rock. Could then easily be used in NG. |

Birds of Preyby ace flymanComment: Super shot, more so because it's a BiF AND it's in focus. Technically difficult even with a multi-shot per second DSLR. You still need to be expecting it, to know it's flight path, to pan, to frame. Publish it now! But only after you fix the typo :) |
