Half-Staff by CuttoothComment: Originally posted by inshaala: Just wondering here out loud: If this were say, the Chinese or North Korean flag (or lets say the Malaysian or Liberian flag which has a similar colour make-up and design to the US flag) taken in exactly the same style, quality and processing if it would reach the same score. I'm going to go out on a limb and say "probably not"... if that is the case and you agree then this is like the perfect display of how the subject and connection with the viewer actually boosts someone's preference for a photo rather than the aesthetics of the photography. Not degrading it in any way it is as good as flag shots get, just food for thought I suppose which reads across to all photography. |
Interesting thought. I probably would have scored a foreign flag higher, simply because we see American flag shots quite often. So it doesn't necessarily stir patriotism in me. And a foreign flag would probably have received the "unique" factor in voting.
That being said, I think this shot is more about the placement of the light, the backlit clouds and interesting sky more than the flag itself. And I like the lines of the ropes going up the pole.
But it is an interesting thought to ponder.
(congrats on the yellow, btw!! :) Message edited by author 2012-09-19 21:56:28. |

The Listenerby TomCubisComment: Very nicely done! I too wonder what it would be like cropped up from the bottom. The first time I saw it, I wanted a little fill on the face. It seemed dark. The next time I saw it I wanted a little fill on the face, it seemed to dark.
Yet each time, after the initial thought of lighting it, I kept thinking how intriguing the dark was. It made me want more. It made me wonder about what she was thinking.

Huge congrats on the ribbon, but I'm more excited about foil. :)
