My grandfather thatched this in the 1950s!!!!! He was quite an interesting and somewhat eccentric character - an atheist with a theology degree from Cambridge and a socialist intellectual. He enlisted under age as a stretcher bearer in the First World War, after which he became a life long pacifist and conscientious objector during WW2. I'm not quite sure when he turned his hand to thatching - for most of my mother's childhood at any rate. He gave up when he fell off a ladder and broke his back. |
