I really like the concept of this shot. Reminds me of a hair coloring commercial. The only reason I didn't give you a 10 was the black hair, at the top and bottom is sooo black, definition is lost. I'm guessing, but I think a flash was used to create the lighting, strong diffused light would have shown the black more, then flash it to give your accent. I really like the mixed braid, especially the strand of black and brown hair. Guess you figured it out, you got a 9, Swash

Overall, this is a pretty nice photo. I don't understand the title (my dumb), but the little jewelly things are pretty. I am a little vague on the texture of this shot (also, my dumb). Everything has texture, sure, but what were you attempting to convey of that texture? Let's take a quick example, a cotton ball looks soft, that is it's texture.

This is a fine photo of straw. It does fit the challenge, but there are few more considerations than just those two. Two more would be: Would I want this photo hanging on my wall? (nice/interesting to look at) Honestly no, I wouldn't. Second is my guess at your level of effort. Let's just say you creatively hid a message in the straw, like I love my wife, yada, yada, yada, whatever. From all appearances, you walked up to this patch of straw, and shot. Finally, the shot is a bit overly dark overall. If this was to convey some sort of message, I missed it.

I'm so sorry, but I am missing this one all over. I see a large white space on the left and bottom, a swatch of what looks like some kind of weaving in the middle and a vague sense of a pattern of holes on the right. Without the title, I really have to say ??????. With the title, I think I can "see this", but very vaguely. After the challenge week, I would like to see a version of this, maybe a whole lot less abstractly. I have no imagination, nor much taste for abstract, my bad. Still, all of this said (written), I still cannot justify a score higher than 5. Swash

Wild effect you have going here. The center of this shot almost seems to jump out at you (I think due to the focus of the bark (rusted metal?) around it. This has both beauty and revultion at the same time. I didn't like it at first, but it grows on you. Started as a 6, but will bump up to a 7. Swash

This is really, really nice. Great focus (on the whole subject, which works for me), nice light levels, just enough negative space (too much leaves me restless), and a title that doesn't show you skipped Biology (joke at somebody else's exp)
No suggestions for improvement, but low WOW factor (maybe I've seen a few too many leaves) so the best I can go is 9. Swash
