Last Nightby PaulComment: I agree with all the comments. I messed up a bit here - I did some clumsy distortion and perspective corrections. |

Amenby MeMex2Comment: I think this is a lovely image, I appreciate how you have wanted for the dynamic element to appear (at least I hope you did! I like to think so). You had a hard job to decide on the rotation of the image with the horizontal slope and the many verticals and other horizontals - and even the distance between the top of the writing and the top of your frame.
There are a few things I might have done differently, I offer them here not by way of a critique (it's your image), but by way of sharing my own perspective and way of seeing.
I'd have seen if the wall, in heavy highlight, could have been recovered - there are many tools that will do this; I'd have been unable to resist a monochrome image - although I do appreciate that I have been culturally conditioned to expect that with certain street work. I go a bit vignette made too!!
My preferences aside, it's a really engaging image - full of message and life. I always have a soft spot for a bit of blur, so I'm really pleased you chose to include that element.
Cheers

Fisherman with a Seagull by MargaretNetComment: Just a quick note to say, although highly effective, this is a DQ-able edit (for the creation of new image features). It split SC opinion but the nature of the challenge meant that we felt that this was an understandable response to the challenge. Human discretion has won out.
Please don't use this image as a reference case to avoid future DQs in less specialised challenges though. (A general note, not specifically aimed at this photographer).
(And congrats on the ribbon!)
Thanks

lakefrontby undieyatchComment: This image has caused me to stop and pay attention. That means it is in my 7-10 voting band. (Voted earlier)
Additionally, it is highly interesting/eclectic meaning it keeps me here long enough to offer a longer comment and a vote of 8 or more.
This is one of my 8s - I like it. Furthermore I think it enriches the DPC collective portfolio. Put simply, I wish we saw more stuff like this. Let me tell you why it pushes all the right buttons for me:
1. The 'aha' moment when the picture clicks.
2. The moire as a feature.
3. The slightly off-centre frame.
4. The ambiguity of the scene - I see the sea, a sea wall and a harbour entrance. I wonder whether we are coming or going. Or already there.
5. The flat tones - excluding the contrasty centre.
6. The daring submission into a DPC challenge!
Thoughtful and well executed. |

1. Not an image I'd normally pull out in this comment series, but I kind of had to!
2. I'm a bulldog fan - amazing creatures!
3. This made me laugh out loud.
4. Lovely high key look.
5. Such a cool beast, in more ways than one!
6. I like the fading blur at the top of the image.
Super-endearing! |

1. Magnificent dynamic range.
2. Well matched toning.
3. The beauty of the clustered birds.
4. The texture overlay.
5. The sense of single-momentness - A real sense of an ephemeral moment preserved.
Lovely image. |

This is one of my 9s - I like it very much. Furthermore I think it enriches the DPC collective portfolio. Put simply, I wish we saw more stuff like this. Let me tell you why it pushes all the right buttons for me:
1. Uber-grainy - I'm a fan of that.
2. Eclectic composition - the juxtaposition of person and structure.
3. The low light levels - like we are squinting.
4. How you've conveyed the brat size of the structure.
5. The precision of the face - you must have worked hard to pull that out.
6. The backdrop of the clouds.
Overall, very very effective. |
