Deer Friendby APComment: So nearly utterly fabulous as opposed to very good. I'm sure it was intentional to leave the face in shadow but for me I really do think that a bit of lightening there would've lifted it!
Still a 7 though (I'd love to know what lens you used.) |

The Book Booth Birdby PelleComment: OK, I'm going through the Free Study submissions, purposefully finding those images I think are shot with a less conventional eye - this is one of those images! Thanks for offering something that isn't just DPC friendly eye-candy (though of course there's nothing wrong with eye-candy). I'll be picking one of these images for my Mu (most underrated) award:
Positives: Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant! Fabulous everything - composition, focus, light, story! Not much left to say really!
Critical stuff: Nothing at all.
Overall: One of the best pigeon shots I've seen - and there are some good ones! |

$&^_aby chipucComment: I love this shot - simple, precise, elegant and even efficient. Fantastic bokeh too.
Has 'expert' written all over it. |

Positives: The name's 'in Wonderland', 'Alice in Wonderland'! Joking aside, this is actually a really well crafted shot. The blurring of the figure emphasises its/her tininess and I really like the detail we see on the insider of the tube. The lighting is bang on.
Critical stuff: Nothing really, I get the impression that it came out exactly as you wanted it to.
Overall: Interesting, well executed shot. |

Positives: This is just flat-out brilliant use of a narrow DOF. I think to make this work you have to absolutely nail the eyes - which you have. I love the colouration and tones too and the vignette... well just about everything.
Critical stuff: Nothing at all.
Overall: Just as powerful as any human portrait shot. One of the best 'pet portraits' I have ever seen. Great photography. |

Positives: Great idea for a shot and the gap in the flurry over the eyes makes the shot. I also really like the colours of the paper - there is the making of a masterpiece in this idea.
Critical stuff: I'm not sure that the execution matches the vision - the image is small, why did you not submit at 720px? Also, I think the lighting isn't great and as a consequence of either the lighting directly or your compensation to show us her face, you have blown the highlights on the paper. The focus isn't as sharp as it might be either.
Overall: A really good concept let down by quite poor technicals. I'd love to see you have another go at pulling this off though - I think the idea is worth the effort. |

Positives: Interesting shot and an interesting title! The first thing I thought when I looked at the image was how I wished he was walking towards me and then I noticed your title - a play on words? This looks sort of HD - I wonder if it is? I think you have really succeeded in making the viewer feel as if they are there, it's like we could walk into the scene.
Critical stuff: I think I'd question the crop - I'd bring the top border down a little.
Overall: A good picture of everyday life which is full of authenticity. |
