Taken at Hyde Park in Sydney.

I often find myself having conversations about whether more and more bikes on city roads is a good or bad thing.

My initial aim was to give the impression of a fast moving cyclist passing all the stationary cars, but the shots where you could make out the cars didn't look as good as this one so in the end I settled for just the cyclist with the hint of a single car.

Converted to B&W in Nik Silver Efex.

USM, flipped horizontally.
Created a new layer, added a little blur to enhance and soften the feel of motion and masked out the cyclist and road areas.
Cloned out some of the capture blur from around the cyclists helmet and the bike wheel to clean up.
Resize and SFW.

Both. Drivers need to have a healthy fear of cyclists in order to remain respectful of their right to the road.

OK, I'm going through the Free Study submissions, purposefully finding those images I think are shot with a less conventional eye - this is one of those images! Thanks for offering something that isn't just DPC friendly eye-candy (though of course there's nothing wrong with eye-candy). I'll be picking one of these images for my Mu (most underrated) award:

Positives: Great use of motion blur - there really is loads of it, I image you must've been travelling along with the bike to get it so pronounced. I really like the high contrast too. Technically and artistically, this is really compelling stuff.

Critical stuff: I imagine editing this shot may have been a challenge, the very high contrast makes the image look a little blocky which makes me think you are hiding a degree of unsharpness that other edits couldn't mask. Having said that - all credit to you for choosing an edit that worked.

Overall: A very, very well executed image.
