OK, I'm going through the Free Study submissions, purposefully finding those images I think are shot with a less conventional eye - this is one of those images! Thanks for offering something that isn't just DPC friendly eye-candy (though of course there's nothing wrong with eye-candy). I'll be picking one of these images for the Mu (most underrated) award:

Positives: I think you have to offer something pretty close to your vision here, it does seem to be well executed. You have managed to make me most curious about the landscape beyond - it actually looks like a poppy field!

Critical stuff: I'm afraid I'm not a fan of this image - I find it to be a little drab, everything seems to be choked back in an effort to resist any possibility that the image might delight.

Overall: A strange one to be sure, I can see what you've gone for - it's just not an image I'm responding well to.

Positives: I like the 'feel' of this image and how it makes me stop and look. I really like the grainy, scratchy look too. I also like the vignette.

Critical stuff: I'm not too much of a fan of the blur - at first I thought it was a Lensbaby shot but I've never got a shot where focus drifts and then returns as it does here.

Overall: An intriguing shot but that I find a little unsatisfying.

Positives: Interesting high macro offered with an almost clinical presentation. Quite different to most ladybug shots we see.

Critical stuff: I'm not a fan of the reflection / highlight - was your light source diffused at all?

Overall: An interesting shot albeit a little bit ugly!

Very well executed - quite striking. I like the way the image has separate sectors, each with its own appeal.

Positives: Beautiful lighting here and the colours too are tremendous. This has an understated quality which I really like.

Critical stuff: It may be a little quirky for some viewers who may balk at its faux-portrait-ness.

Overall: I really like it.

Masterfully executed. I'm guessing Lallisig or kiwiness - top drawer in every department.

Positives: Brave, brave, brave! I love it! It's like you've painted with noise, quite masterful.

Critical stuff: Nothing at all.

Overall: Bold, refreshing and great. 10.

Positives: I like the honesty of this shot and the effort you have gone to in preserving a frontal facade - we feel like we are just sliding past in a car (just like most people do I bet).

Critical stuff: I don't know if you have Photoshop but the lens correction tool would have allowed you to compensate for the perspective a little and bring it that final tad square.

Overall: Not the most naturally engaging of shots but one which makes us reflect on the world we pass by every day.
