Whiteby aznymComment: OK, I'm going through the Free Study submissions, purposefully finding those images I think are shot with a less conventional eye - this is one of those images! Thanks for offering something that isn't just DPC friendly eye-candy (though of course there's nothing wrong with eye-candy). I'll be picking one of these images for the Mu (most underrated) award:
Positives: Brave, brave, brave! I love it! It's like you've painted with noise, quite masterful.
Critical stuff: Nothing at all.
Overall: Bold, refreshing and great. 10. |

Down on Dewey Ave.by juliejoldComment: OK, I'm going through the Free Study submissions, purposefully finding those images I think are shot with a less conventional eye - this is one of those images! Thanks for offering something that isn't just DPC friendly eye-candy (though of course there's nothing wrong with eye-candy). I'll be picking one of these images for the Mu (most underrated) award:
Positives: I like the honesty of this shot and the effort you have gone to in preserving a frontal facade - we feel like we are just sliding past in a car (just like most people do I bet).
Critical stuff: I don't know if you have Photoshop but the lens correction tool would have allowed you to compensate for the perspective a little and bring it that final tad square.
Overall: Not the most naturally engaging of shots but one which makes us reflect on the world we pass by every day. |

Pig Headby kcmComment: OK, I'm going through the Free Study submissions, purposefully finding those images I think are shot with a less conventional eye - this is one of those images! Thanks for offering something that isn't just DPC friendly eye-candy (though of course there's nothing wrong with eye-candy). I'll be picking one of these images for the Mu (most underrated) award:
Positives: An interesting choice of subject - a brave entry. I think the general balance of the image is just about right - albeit with the caveats below.
Critical stuff: I think the slightly angled composition distracts from your subject somewhat. Also, although the pink pig is powerful, I think a monochrome presentation of this work may have been better received.
Overall: A good capture of a good slice of life (and ham!). |

Positives: Nicely framed frames! Excellent coloration and I like the distortions too. I think your choice of aspect ratio works very well.
Critical stuff: Those not attracted by studies of geometry might not have too much time for this.
Overall: A well balanced image, the shooting and editing match the subject matter very well indeed. |

Happy New Year, Me!by h2Comment: OK, I'm going through the Free Study submissions, purposefully finding those images I think are shot with a less conventional eye - this is one of those images! Thanks for offering something that isn't just DPC friendly eye-candy (though of course there's nothing wrong with eye-candy). I'll be picking one of these images for the Mu (most underrated) award:
Positives: Very unconventional portrait and so very, very well executed - well lit, well shot, well processed.
Critical stuff: I hate looking at the image; I'm the most anti-smoking person I know and I've seriously struggled to look at the image for as long it has taken to write the comment (I know that must seem strange to a smoker).
Overall: Very good work albeit one I really, really don't enjoy. |

Positives: Oh, I really like this - but what's really annoying me is that I don't know why! What sort of a critique is this going to be?? Let me try - I like how it is inside / out / outside / in; hidden and revealed; public and private; free and constrained. Does any of that make sense?
Critical stuff: Perhaps the crop? I keep wishing the window was central in the frame but I suspect if I played around with it, it would look better just as it is.
Overall: So much more than the sum of its parts - taken by someone who really 'sees'. |

Positives: Such a dynamic image - I think you must have moved the camera vertically on a tripod in the snow. It works tremendously well. The monochrome, high contrast treatment is perfect for the subject matter.
Critical stuff: Nothing at all.
Overall: A very effective image - a brilliant fusion of subject, technique and edit. |

Positives: An interesting scene - you have captured the bizarre juxtaposition of the themed cafe with the chilly waters and landscape beyond. Technically is is very well done - great light and coloration.
Critical stuff: Not too much really - I think you have gotten full value out of this scene.
Overall: A well executed rendition of a curious scene. |
