Commenting but of course not voting on Max's picture. I could confidently give an objective score (quirky enough for a 6 from me) but I'll avoid doing so.

I didn't see any of his pictures until we went home. I did point out a few scenes for him, but not this one. I'd never have noticed it.

Editing wise, I sat him down with Aperture and showed him how to round trip to the Nik products. He browsed the presets in Silver Efex Pro and HDR Effects Pro. This edit is The marvellous Granny's Attic in HDR Efex Pro. He then played with the global sliders a bit. There was a strong highlight in the centre of the picture that he didn't like so I showed him how to use a control point to reduce.

Other than that interface support - all of the choices you see here from capture to edit are his.

Let's see if his interest is maintained.

I was playing around with your image earlier and made a very similar edit - crop matches to the millimetre. Granny's Attic??

Looks like the Blue to me. Such precision, I think I might have enjoyed more colour though.

I see you've pulled out the foreground; it's nice to see that detail but the overall appearance in relation to contrast seems diminished to me.

Did you do some sharpening - that adds information and thus size.

It's certainly an enhancement though - much better contrast and colour.

I'm going through the entries, stopping at those images I feel have had the benefit of an unconventional eye and dwelling a little longer to try to see and appreciate what you saw. This is one of those images.

Positives: I know this is yours Ben but I'm not going to let that stop me from commenting and scoring. I feel like this is a photo within a photo - the man sat peacefully in the chair, perhaps enjoying the light - that whole quadrant of the image self contained... then we move our eye outwards and the context changes - the darkness has us and the figure on the right take on an ominous presence suggestive of endangerment of the peaceful guy. It's like we're seeing something we shouldn't - a glimpse of a dark sub-strata of life that normally live at the periphery (even blind spot) of or perception and vision.

Critical stuff: Nope

Overall: Perfectly judged.
