Yes I feel like I'm in the same boat about you, when it comes to lighting... Tip to what I'm trying to do to learn more about it: when I'm shooting indoors I usually use black or white cardboards as a set up, I get the side lamp in my living room and only use that as a source of light... I then light it from all sorts of angles and shoot each time, later on I decide on what worked and what didn't. I hope this helps a bit and have a go, it's actually alot of fun... here's an example of when I did this:

I think this is absolutely wonderful, it doesn't bother me 1 bit that I can't figure out what it is, I think that's where the beauty lies in this... you are basically forced to look at it for it's forms and not what it's meant to be. I truly believe in that and it's how I like to shoot sometimes, but I have noticed I pay a high price for this kind of shots in challenges which I think it's a shame.
