Yes I feel like I'm in the same boat about you, when it comes to lighting... Tip to what I'm trying to do to learn more about it: when I'm shooting indoors I usually use black or white cardboards as a set up, I get the side lamp in my living room and only use that as a source of light... I then light it from all sorts of angles and shoot each time, later on I decide on what worked and what didn't. I hope this helps a bit and have a go, it's actually alot of fun... here's an example of when I did this:
