I like the potential this image has. It shows an ability to look at the world around you from the perspective of an artist seeking out form and pattern. You were probably hurt by the technical stuff more than anything. For me, for this type of image to work, there needs to be infinite depth of field, i.e., everything is in sharp focus. Having everything in focus puts all the objects in the photo on the same visual plane which in an abstract type of image works best, in my experience. There is a lack of sharpness due to shallow depth of field and what sharpness there was on the bell seems to have been lost in resizing (I think there is a tutorial somewhere on DPC that tells you how to resize without losing quality). I will add that were this a photo in which we were looking out at a landscape or a human sort of scenario the slightly blurred 'window' that we are looking through can work nicely as a framing device. I think what happened here is that the macro function caused the shallow depth of field.

Heehee...I thought of taking a shot like this of my daughter...and today she celebrates her 16th birthday. She still uses her binky (I don't let her use her old one at night when she's sleeping). She uses it when she sits and watches tv or draws at home. She will also take it to relax on the drive home after long dance classes. She has ADHD so I don't mind her using a comfort aide like this to help her unwind. It's better than drugs, booze or smoking, right? She actually threw it away when she was 3 but my husband dug it out of the waste basket and put it in his top drawer where he keeps mememtos. She found it years later. :D She started using it in secret and then openly when she realized we didn't mind.

Anway, back to you. This works for the challenge very well and it is also well done and quite lovely.

Without the title, I'm not really seeing the 'comfort' aspect of this photo. I'ts a lovely photo but the snow and water don't evoke a sense of comfort. There is quite a distance from the viewer to the subject and that also takes a bit away from the idea of comfort to me. This looks like a shoehorn effort to me.

An interesting take on the challenge with potential for good design. Unfortunately, this just isn't an interesting photo to me. The light isn't shown in a particularly compelling way. It has potential as interesting subject matter in the curves but this angle doesn't exploit that. A central placement of the subject matter is generally not the best choice either. The light is competing with the busy background of the trees. If you had perhaps shown the lamp in contrast with a single tree this might have worked. I don't think it was the best pairing to start with though.

I thought this was a pretty cool shot and definitely evokotive of the era in terms of the coloring and the processing. I only gave it a 5 though because it was too small to really evaluate and it borders on digital art.

I almost let this one pass because it made me think of art from early REM albums but by the title that clearly wasn't the intent. It's a cool photo but I voted kind of low because of the DNMC element. It was pretty clear from the challenge description that it was the 1980's. :D

I'm surprised this didn't do better. This was amongst the highest scoring shots on my voting page. It felt very "80's" to me in terms of style and mood. I got it right away. Plus it was really well done. You got pooched in my opinion.
