Drifting Apart

Like the toning very much, like the feel you've generated in the grass, and those hanging strings from the tree (they have a name, those things, though I can't recall it right now). Somehow, though, the shot overall doesn't do enough for me. It might be the sher arbitrariness of those two stones: it somehow lacks real mystery. Struggling to explain - but something isn't cutting it for me. 7

Good tonality, especially the grass colours.

Framed So Clearly

Lovely, fascinating, involving composition. A touch too far on the sharpening perhaps? That always shows particularly strongly on diagonal lines, of course - especially in that image right little section between the frosted glass areas of the first doors. Really like the subsidiary, image-within-image work here, the difficulty of finding a route through the chaos of reflections to the 'real' - a neat critique of the corporate world, in its way.

The Bridge

The Bridge

Comment:
The compositional elements of this shot are really quite interesting - so it's perhaps interesting to think about why it doesn't work, at least for me, which it certainly doesn't. Your sky here is pretty flat and monotonous, which perhaps doesn't help - though one would think that just pushed the interest to the bridge and railway. The actual organisation of elements across the frame is a touch weak - the vanishing point of the railway, and indeed the tracks themselves are relegated to a very small corner of the image, making them lose some impact. There's a lack of detail here too - that fine resolution that would show the textures of the bridge, and the vegetation beside the tracks. A scene that has great potential, I think - but in the end let down by composition (the placement of the rails relative to the bridge) and very simply poor overly-general light. Nothing I think you could have done about the weather I know, but nevertheless that is what lets it down.

Do i sense the hand of the perilous Neatimage here? it has something of that slightly exaggerated sharpening and loss of detail inother areas that can come from that. That said - wonderful moment, wonderful light, great composition - with the proviso that it feels a touch too centrally balanced: I think framing this with the most important subjects more thoroughly ditricuted around frame would give it a greater sense of stability: for instance, nice as the light in the clouds is, lsoing a little of it would place that largest rock more strongly, and i think the whole image would come together that bit more strongly - and trying it by scrolling to obscure just below that topmost branch seems to back that up. Have you tried that? Otherwise, a very fine shot indeed. 7

This is spookily familiar - I've either been there or seen it in a book. It wouldn't be one of the Landmark Trust proerties in the Uk would it? I do like the organisation of those strong graphical elements within this frame, and the tonality you've achieved here. The only thing I would like more of would be texture in that stone - it all seems a touch flat. Minor point, but significant. 8

Good landscape work indeed. Despite your title, it doesn't meet the challenge though, does it? Control of light is very well done - almost has the feeling of being a composite shot - those clouds and the snow surely ought to be way brighter than the trees? Excellently done on that side of things.

Big-time fill flash? Effectively done, too - and has allowed those colours in the underside of the leaves through nicely. Good light control and blalnce overall, perhaps let down a touch by that branch intruding so heavily in frame? An unobscured view of the house would make less of a feature of the branches and more of a frame, but these are minor points. Atouch too much on the big brght sunny day side for my taste, but a very well executed shot nevertheless.

Fun. That fractional over-exposure (even for the technique) on the paper leaves some annoying artefacts around the tears, and that light is not particularly effective on the face behind either. Something softer perhaps? Although i appreciate that that would remve the striking starkness, and thus some of the angry quality, of those paper shadows. 7

Comment:
I'd have liked for there to be more flowers - this way they're perhaps more of an occasional intrusion than a framing device. I also wonder whether you might not have placed that fountain slightly differently within that frame of flowers - there's rather a lot of open water, and it doesn't have the interest to hold the eye, for me. Approaching a good shot though.
