Variations on a Chromatic Scaleby jjbeguinComment: Are there really that many people who've never seen sheet music? I find that hard to believe, even for the generally blinkered voters here. It remains a great great image nevertheless, of course. |

Worn outby geewhyComment: Been away for a while, and just browsing through the favourite photogs recent stuff ... good work, my friend. Tight, wonderful composition; great light, good contrast. A near painterly sense of texture. |

Fallby emorgan49Comment: Great colours, butt that very poor and over-exposed sky lets things down, and an overall lack of punch to the shot - look how much more dramatic the colours are in the reflection than in what is necessarily the obvious subject - the real trees - simply because of a little under-exposure. The light seems wrong to me - so very blank, undefined. Waiting for a moment of great light can be as much a part of this kind of photography as anything else at all. |

Innocenceby DamianComment: There's another shot like this which seems equally mis-titled. Excellent portrait, great sense of feeling to it, but that feeling, for me, is most certainly not innocence. It could be the moment of the loss of innocence, perhaps, and would be the more powerful for that being the case. It speaks to me of that moment when the realisation dawns that maybe all one's dreams are not achievable ... amybe there just isn't the time, maybe one has to learn to live a life unfulfilled, or of constant struggle against the hand one has been dealt. Titles ... the only words you get to offer us. |

The race is won, he's free at lastby TuckersmomComment: Excellent portrait - great sense of power and speed, for all he's so still. Real tension in his physicality, too. The waves make the location more important than perhaps would be ideal, and I don't find anything in that location or contrast to aid the image, but nice work all the same. |

Sylviaby joannsComment: Good tonality, great light ... and the kind of portrait photography i loath, I'm afraid. For me, overly posed, unnatural, aspiring to some kind of Beaton-esque nostalgia. The execution is impeccable of course, but I just don't like this kind of thing. |

autumn beautyby PhileineComment: Very pure, very stark - but perhaps more impact from those leaves is needed? I get, I think, your point; but find the lack of real definition (largely due to size) more of a stumbling block than an enhancement. One of the perils of the limits on image size, I fear. |

Longing for a Holdby KatspetkatComment: This, to my eye, borders on being a very fine photograph but doesn't quite make it. I like some of the compositional quality, though I would perhaps have found a greater dissociation between the near-ground and distance more effective - I'm not sure the anchor links the two areas convincingly enough. The metallic quality of the water is well caught, but then the far bank lets things down for me - neither silhouetted nor defined, it somehow isn't anything at all. Without that far bank - perhaps just the jetty and the anchor, especially the wetness of the jetty, perhaps you might have achieved that rare thing of making a heavily overcast day visually interesting. Nice attempt. 7 |

Searching for an Audienceby lousy_beatnikComment: So where is the world press photo exhibition right now? Love thhat shot of Colina - and taken for the most unlikely publication, being the Daily Mail in the UK, whihc is pretty much a sneering right-wing rag. I do like the efffect of photos in photographs, though I'm not totally sure about this one. He seems too dissociated from the rest of the image, not playing a part in the composition. |

Harvestby thatcloudthereComment: Good work. Woudl like to see a larger version, as i suspect the detail really tells, so it's a shame about the site limitations - but that also is what has to be worked with here. 7 |
