This has a slightly magical feel to it.

It does indeed look like people are being drawn towards the light - but one of the strengths is that we can't see who at an individual level - just male and female forms embarking on the long journey from darkness to light.

Together - but separate, going in the same direction, but at their own pace.

There is a lot to this photo.

I love the simple dignity of the girl and the slightly formal pose set off nicely by the overlay that gives it an aged but timeless feel - and the wording on the paperwork can come into play at many levels. 'Not to be Sold' and 'Property of Malawi Government' at one level clearly referring to itself - but in a country where there are limited resources and education people can also very quickly become commodities.

Maybe, just maybe if we squint a bit, this book could be seen as a shield or breastplate telling the viewers that for this girl at least she is 'currently' the property of the Government while she studies to become free through her education and isn't to be 'sold' in any sense of the word.

Always such powerful images.
