River Tay Nightby GADriverComment: I like the shimmery nature of the lights. I am just not sure I like the placement of the horizon - I think if it were my photo, I would have dropped the horizon on center.
Regarding the question on the aperture and focus - the objects he is focused on are all at a similar focal plane (near infinity) so he is not going to be a problem especially using a wide angle set up as he did.
DOF calculators are a cool thing and can answer this question pretty quickly. The benefit of going to the 'middle' of the f-stop range for landscapes often has more to do with hitting the 'sweet spot' of lens where the images are sharpest. You want to close down the aperture if you want both objects very close to the camera and far away to be 'in focus'. In the case of the photo here, there is no close object to worry about.
A quick DOF calculation shows that if he was focused at objects more than 15 or 20 feet away at 18mm on his Canon T3 at f3.5, his near focus point would by about 8-10 feet and his far focus point would be infinite.

volleyballby mbrutus2009Comment: Some nice action shots in this set. But I would watch your white balance - these really are strongly on the yellow side. This is very typical in gymnasiums like this, so I would recommend adjusting your w/b setting to match the lighting (fluorescent) or bring a gray card so you can set it manually in the gym before the event. |
