In Each Otherby NeuferlandComment: Just not sharp enough to score. Also, I think the strong contrast works against this type of 'soft' subject. Moms and babies are often shot using very soft focus and sometimes soft filters. |

A coal fire on a winter eveningby p2jvrComment: Beautiful fire, especially the colour and the texture of the flame. Your modle is overlit by the flash and it seems to have spoiled that soft glow that a fire gemerates. That light makes us feel warm and really relate to the pic.
A way around this is to bounce your flash off the ceiling or if you can set it manually, just let it use a weak 'fill'. I'm guessing that just the fire by itself ddin't throw enough |

American Dinerby Shiva DasComment: What a sad social commentary :) If you'd managed to get all of the foreground pills in focus too this would be a winner. Since you couldn't, I would have taken away those elements that were OOF |
