First, i suggest you take the photo eye level to the dog (just like when taking pictures of children). Second, color of background should enhance the subject. In this case, a lighter color background could help since Jack is all black. Third, play with the available light. I liked it when the luster of Jack's fur is obvious but light is still too harsh. Placing him under a shade with light coming from the side would help. Lastly, make Jack pose in a more interesting way, say, in a playful mood or directly staring at you.

Your focus is great, sharp and detailed. DOF is also good, making background a little blurred.

I like dogs. They are great subjects. Enjoy your labrador and your camera to the max! Hope these helped.
