Beautiful and evocative. Lovely composition / crop. Restrained processing ... it might have been tempting to overprocess that sky, to wring more 'drama' out of the scene, but you resisted the temptation, and thereby retained its charm. Bravo! 9

Really lovely composition. Looks simple but it's actually quite sophisticated and thoughtful. Love the way the cows form a repeating echelon of miserable resignation as they suffer the rain. The bit of visible track efficiently leads the viewer's attention to the most advantageous start point for studying the herd. Also love the 'rained-out' background, which both frames the cows and reinforces the feeling of sodden misery. 9

Nice photograph. Basic editing rules ... why? Or more to the point, why say so? Do you imagine that makes it more meritorious? It's a fine image, and doesn't need to be boosted or rationalised to score well. Terrific composition, well captured and effectively (if a little basically) processed. 8

Me too, Chris. The entry was really very good but this one is truly memorable and I must prefer it. It's got an epic, cosmic quality that I suspect the late Carl Sagan might have loved. I think you picked the right one for the best score from DPC voters, however; the bit of lens flare & the tilted wall would have distracted many.

I particularly like this. It's a simple, stark composition, but clever because there's just enough detail in the darkness to give it form and purpose. The yellow of the lights looks great against the predominantly black and white of the rest of the image. I also like it because it has a 'Close Encounters' feel to it; it even makes me think of that damn music.

I like this very much. It's a terrific, effective composition because of the angle, but also the crop and the clever placement of the two figures. I reckon it's a 'better-than-it-first-looks' image.

Really nice candid portrait. The DOF is absolutely right, in spite of what you said in the associated forum thread. A particularly nice touch is the three out-of-focus lights, acting as a leading line for the couple's faces. Even if you crop the person with the backpack & leave just two of these lights, it still works. Nice.

Love the clouds with the polarizer. The ISO 800 makes it look like a photograph from the 1950's (I like that too, I'm from the 1950's myself). But what I like most is the very elegant composition, where the road and the horizon meet so casually at the edge of the frame. Simple & very nice.
