I think this looks good in black and white. I find the primary subject and the focus to be at odds here. The primary subject, referenced by the title, is not in sharp focus, but the background is. The background certainly helps provide reasoning for the railing, though I wish the railing was in sharper focus than the backround.

I really like the lighting in this shot! Very nice background and focus. I definitely like the splash of green to the left, though it feels slightly awkward hanging half in and half out of the shot.

I like this shot a lot :) Great inclusion of several patterns, and they fit together so nicely. I like the dominant blues in this shot. Good focus and perspective.

Winter pattern

Great concept for this shot, and meets challenge. The shot is overall pretty busy. I wonder if this same idea could be done with a tighter crop, and focusing on a smaller section of the pattern to bring more emphasis to it.

Meets the challenge well. Maybe a little sharpening could bring out some interesting details in the rock. I'd also be interested to see a closer shot with some rock patterns and maybe a branch or moss pattern too.

Thorny Pattern

Great idea and subject, though I think that this shot could be improved by getting up close and personal with the cactus. The background is a little distracting and it adds nothing to the shot. A more unique perspective could bring a lot of interest to this shot too. I'd love to see a macro shot focused just on a few rows of spines to *really* emphasize the patterns here.
