Marine Biology - So much we dont knowby nlghttrainComment: In regards to your thread - the first thing that comes to mind is the composition. The rule of thirds exists for a reason - it helps make a documentary type shot interesting. You're shot is perfectly centred, and closely cropped at the edges. Putting a bit of empty space on the right, in the direction its eyes are looking, may convey a bit more interest to the casual observer.
Also, what other said about slightly harsh lighting on the subject. You used a relatively slow shutter speed, so I imagine this was the best of several shots, but with a bit of curves or levels in photoshop, you could take a bit of the harsh light off the cuttlefish.
Hope this helps. PM if you have any questions
cheers

Afterlifeby MonicagdComment: The Willi's have no wings! Knowing how hard it is to shoot theatre, especially a ballet that is this dark in this act, kudos! I hope this is understood by enough people to garner you a good score. Good luck! |

The Life Beyond the Tracksby Dirt_DiverComment: Uhm - wow, this doesn't really need a critique, but hello from the critique club!
This is an interesting picture. My first instinct is to say the curves before the vanishing point may have hurt you a touch. The point is distinct, clear, and obviously meet the challenge, yet the curves create a detour bump on the way.
Composition - I wonder if you had included the tops of the trees, so this way the point wouldn't be quite as centred.
The only other critique I could offer is that the sky seems a touch unnatural. I understand the DPC aesthetic loves beautiful, saturated colours, but on my monitor, the pinks are a bit too much.
This was an excellent picture that did well with voters - congratulations on a new personal best!

Color of Beautyby ETphonethishomeComment: Greetings from the Critique Club
My first impression from this picture is the abstractness of this picture. While very appealing, it is difficult to find the rule of thirds aspect in this picture. With your use of depth of field, this picture meets the challenge, but in an abstract way that is not obvious when looked at during voting. I believe this may have hurt you in the voting process. Should this have been an abstract macro, this would have likely done much better.
Technically, there is little to fault with the picture as I believe the use of the macro filter has done its job.
I like the use of a shallow depth of field in this, and I hope you will use your macro filter more!
On a whole, the picture is a bit dark. While it creates an interesting mood, I do not know if that is what you intended. In general, DPC voters tend to not prefer moddy, darker photos, and tend to the 'eye candy' photos.
The other thing I noticed is it seems a touch oversharpened, though you do not list it in your processing steps.
If you have any questions, feel free to pm me
Cheers

Solving Death's Riddlesby SebiComment: nice picture. I think a touch more light to bring out the details of the specimens would have bumped your score even higher
Hope you got to dissect a few of those critters! |

Aspen Rae 02.JPGby dwterryComment: My preferenece of the lot. I'm not a fan of the - it's a girl so let's make it pink! (personal preference). This one is clean and elegent, so it has appeal for everyone
One side note - consider taking out the word little. The rhthym when reading it sounds better (IMHO) |
