An interesting image that contributes to the challenge well
How appropriate having last weekend run a birds of prey photography workshop! Truly fits the challenge brief well in an, as you say, slightly different composition, you might try selling him the image for marketing? As opposed to a static wings folded portrait on the glove your bird is more dynamic having some wing movement. He's nicely isolated from the soft focus background with good sharp detail especially around the all-important eyes and beak. All in all a competent image, well done Eugene. |

Ah what a great profession to have, working to give others pleasure. You have captured the moment nicely Marcel, you can almost hear the melody playing, his concentration clearly evident with his fingers demonstrating the mastery of his technique. The detail in the musician is very good and well isolated with the soft focus background but that is where I have my main problem. I rather wish I could see more detail in the band behind or a different viewpoint that has less distractions. I know this is not easy especially in a crowded audience so I think a larger DOF would have been better in this instance. |

This looks like a little owl, at least thats what its known as in the UK if indeed it is a similar bird. If so, the colours are not true, your bird has a distinct reddish hue whereas the bird I am referring to most definitely does not it is much more brownish. Assuming the colours are correct and it is a different bird I like your off-centre composition which hides any tell-tale jesses of a falconers bird making it look a more natural wild bird capture which it may be. The detail of the bird is lovely with those gorgeous eyes dominating. Thanks for your entry janine. |

A skilled image of a skilled lady concentrating on the task in hand, your candid shot has captured the moment well. The exposure is good with plenty of detail throughout and the composition is also good with a clear focal point of whats going on taken in such a position that we get to see the essential elements of her working environment. I suppose the only minor improvement I would make is to angle the camera slightly lower to include less of the ceiling and more of the lower half but it still works ok. Well done for your high score and placing Jonathon. |

An opportune moment captured, what an ideal setting for such a meal. I like your composition, the two people and their meal are the focal point but we are also able to see the lovely location which is contributing well to their overall experience. I don't know whether its my screen but there feels a reddish hue to everything, if not then a little tweaking with the white balance wouldn't go amiss. As far as the major cloning is concerned you must have made a cracking good job of it because its not all evident to me. Well done Bob for this lovely entry |

It's all about the story....by Ja-9Comment: Hello from the critique club
An interesting image that meets the challenge well
You're right, the gossip is as much a part of the experience as the hair itself. Your image captures well one of many moments where the mirrored eye contact is engaging both in an important part of the story that takes precedence over the immediate task itself. It is nicely captured in a candid way that feels totally natural and therefore convincing. Your composition is excellent including the foreground tray and soft focus background shows that we are at the hairdressers as opposed to a home setting. The mono processing is good and suits the subject well, the exposure is perfect with good detail throughout and positioned in such a way as to block out the bright light of the window. Another great entry Janine, well done. |

I̢۪m not sure this is the strongest most original idea but there are several aspects about it I quite like. The pink effervescence of the tablet against the blues and the way it is filling the liquid void is really quite effective but I think the cod liver oil tablets are an unnecessary addition, the simplicity of the glass alone would probably have sufficed. Looking at those capsules makes me think ooh there was a missed opportunity, a macro abstract could have been quite wicked especially with some effective lighting. Anyway, Ellie, thanks for your entry and the informative write up. |

A great idea Benedikt and well executed. Its a simple idea that gets its message over very effectively through the shear simplicity of it, I like it. Your composition and lighting are both good I can̢۪t find much more to say about it really apart from I̢۪m really not sure why it didn̢۪t get a higher score but I suppose thats the way it goes sometimes here, anyway, thanks for a great entry |

A great idea Marcel that generally works well but the skin tones let it down a little, they look unnatural and the plant is somewhat over-saturated too. True mono hands against the black background without the distracting greens and pinks together with a slightly more natural coloured plant and this excellent entry would have made the front page easily, like I say, its a great idea just a little lacking in execution. Thanks for another excellent entry Marcel, keep at it. |

Well what can I say Eugene! Ok you admit it yourself its neither your best nor your worst but as an ex narrowboat dweller for fifteen years your image still manages to convey the concept of the cut which I miss very much so it resonates with me. Although there are too many blown highlights there is a very effective contrast happening here with the bright water leading you straight to the object of interest the man on the bridge. The composition is good though I might have been tempted to clone the aerial out in the background and, of course, its reflection. I like your tongue in cheek sense of humour, yet another mobile finds its fitting resting place! You̢۪re absolutely right I̢۪ve not seen this piece of glass before, you have a very eclectic collection of glass I am envious of.
I really appreciate your comments but I must admit I am rather sad I seem to be the only one here at present who appears to be commenting. The reason for that is because I really appreciate the value of critique, both giving and receiving, so I will continue to make the effort, especially as long as I know it is being appreciated. Thanks a lot Eugene, keep using that wonderful glass to keep those fascinating images coming. |
