The main problem is that the lighting is too direct and harsh, as if from a camera hotshoe-mounted flash. Using off-camera light sources off to the side and using a reflector or diffuser to soften the light would make this picture a hundred times better.

Also, the choice of a blue background and the blue uniform is actually not a good choice. The subject isn't well separated from the background.

The placement of the subject is pretty good, although it might be more interesting if the camera was lower, it's kind of looking down on the boy and might be improved by getting lower.

I hope to someday create art of the caliber of this piece. Anyone can be a photographer, but to make something that is truly artistically appealing makes you into a real artist.

Positively gorgeous! It feels very ethereal with the DOF effect softening the bowl's edges. I'll be interested to see what lens length/aperture you used for this and how the lighting was done. 9!

Fantabulous! I am really drawn to this image. The blue cast is interesting, perhaps created by setting the white balance waaaay off? Or maybe a photoshop effect. Either way, it's interesting, though I'd love to see the photo with a "natural" candlelight exposure, just for fun. Nice job.
