excellent composition and focus. the model's expression is perfect and i like the two-toned backdrop.

my only comment about this is the lighting. there seem to be a couple of hotspots on the right side of her face that could probably be evened out with more diffuse light, and her hair is totally lost in the shadows with the darker background. personally, i would like to see more definition behind her head on the left side -- just to make her hair a bit more separated from the background.

also, your unique means of assigning T I T L E S gives your identity away during voting. your style is so unique that it's normally easy to pick you out, but i would prefer to be left with a little bit of mystery :)

congrats on another fabulous photo!

the composition and color in this shot really rock. the focus is also very good, although it seems a bit far back (the ears are sharp, but the lips and nose seem kind of soft).

suggestions for improvement include:

- removing that green plant. it's the only part of the background that's in color and it draws the eyes away from the model.

- expose the kids eyes. although the sunglasses do convey "attitude," i think that many people feel that eyes are one of the more important aspects of a portrait. this shot removes that attribute from the mix.

- there seems to be a stray hair on his forehead that could easily be cloned out. that's minor, though.

overall, a great shot that really stands out. this is going to be a fun one for you to show his fiancee later on. :)

what a great model to have -- you're quite lucky!

this is an excellent pose and quite well-lit. the catchlight in his eyes is nice and the composition, while very centered, works in this type of shot.

however, the background distracts (i keep wondering why there is a goat laying down behind his head) and that definitely takes away from the model's face. also, the right side does get a little shadowy -- perhaps another light source or a reflector would even out the lighting over there.

finally, the focus seems a bit soft. you mention in the details that you softened it somewhat, but i think this should be sharper. his skin and his shirt also have some kind of an overly smooth, plasticy quality that doesn't seem natural to me. i prefer a decent portrait that explores all of the textures available.

keep shooting! you've got a great model to keep busy!

good crop that's tight on the face. focus is pretty good as well, and the helmet helps tell a bit of a story.

suggestions for improvement:

- the harsh midday lighting is extremely uneven and creates a wierd, bright "mask" over part of his face. taking this out of the direct sunlight would really help.

- the unusual angle doesn't really help the photo. instead of focusing on this man's face and eyes and wondering what his story is, i find myself thinking "man, he hasn't shaved and i wonder what happened to the back of his face?"

- we're looking almost straight on to this person. having him turn a bit more and then turn his head back toward the camera might be a more interesting pose.

a different pose with more diffuse lighting would help this out immensely. don't give up -- keep trying. using the polarizer definitely helped out here.

I think the color and lighting in this are just outstanding and you did a really great job with the flash -- the catchlight in her eyes really makes them pop.

Some suggestions for improvement might include:

- A contrasting color for the backdrop. Right now everything seems very reddish.

- A tighter crop on the woman's face. Although the composition of this is great and the background does help tell a story, traditionally, portraits are a much tighter crop. I think this might be the single biggest reason why this did not score higher. If you had not worried about including the entire heart, it might not have left so much space at the top and put the focus more on the model herself, which is where the focus is expected to be for a portrait.
