Barry, many thanks for putting the additional info up. My comment in 'the thread' was because I was confused by the results and tbh I still am - probably why I've never added an overlay to any Challenge entry ;)

Hi from Andi at the Critique Club.

Firstly, it obviously meets the challenge as being of Historic Interest and I am drawn to the ruins in the garden. For me the picture is rather boring and (other than the ruins) there is nothing of much interest. No 1, 2 or 3 votes is a pretty rare thing (especially for me) and this shows there is nothing major wrong with the picture.

I do like the idea of the large lawn leading to the building though it's not the best looking lawn I've seen and the central subject work for me. You could have removed the street lamp on the left. The sky is nice but a more powerful one would have helped it's score.

Your top scoring image so far so your going in the right direction Daniel ;)

Hi Janine, Andi from the Critique Club (again).

62/63 and it's really hard for me to critique this shot knowing what good work you have done.

This looks a bit messy to me and all a bit old rather than new other than the caterpillar. Nothing is sharp here including the subject and sadly not your best work.

Oh, the placing of the Caterpillar in the frame is really good :)

Greetings from Andi at the Critique Club (only a year late).

I like this image, it's vibrant, has good movement and well composed, especially so as it was originally shot for a Candid. Challenge. As bvy said the lines work really well here. I'm happy with the composition although the big issue is that you didn't straighten the horizon.

In an ideal world the girls right hand would be the one pointing upward and her right out - that would show her face and add another dynamic to the image.

I did say I like the composition but feel if you had a lower vantage point it would enhance the shot and separate her head from the horizon. The dof, sharpness and light is spot on for me.

It's a fun image and makes me smile (and, I should get the OH a pair of those wellies).

Hi from Andi and the Critique Club Janine ;)

Lets start on the subject, a shot from the back with the head turned like this is a good position for me however he/she lacks enough sharpness and detail to work well (especially in a FS). The beak looks pin sharp but sharpness seems to fade from there back. The Yellow-Rumped Warbler has a very vibrant yellow and it seems a little lacking here for me (I'm not a birder btw, this is from google images lol).

Whilst I prefer the blurred background of foliage for this type of shot the even light blue sky serves as a good background that lets the viewer focus on the bird and tree.

The tree? well, for me the star of the image is the decaying leaf on the right along with the rest of the oof leaves and the bird does get a little lost in the leaves behind it.

Hope this helps Janine but guess you knew all that already after skimming through your portfolio ;)

River Reflections

Hi Drake and welcome from the Critique Club (albeit it a little late).

I'll dive right in with my issues with the image and why (I think) it got the score it did. For me the sky is not 'angry' as you say but has a large blown area then insipid greys (classic HDR effects). The overall image is a little boring for me however it is a lovely spot and I do like the reflection of the clouds in the river.

I think if this was cropped to a square, removing most of the sky it would look better and if there was a canoe or Swan sailing up the river then it would have faired much better imo. The different colours of the trees add to the scene.

The leading lines created by the banks of the river draw me nicely to the end of it and I wonder what is around the bend (if it is actually a bend). Maybe a polarizing filter would have helped the sky and cut through the reflection better than HDR?
