But one thing--look at where the center mountaintops meet the clouds...is this JPEG corrupted or is it an illusion? I see some weird disjointed effects and double ridges.

Very nice! I like both this and your winning entry. I think your entry is a better fit for the generic concept of portrait, so I think you picked the right one (obviously)! (But this one is very very good, and stands on it's own!)
