Chroicocephalus novaehollandiaeby jomariComment: Just read your comments- sounds like the Ring-Billed Gull that we have. It's also commonly referred to as a seagull & they can be found in the same type of locations as your Australian Silver Gull.

HouseFinch_3061by hahn23Comment: Hmmm... I just looked back at my 'purple finch' & it does look like the house finch. I found a site that described how to differentiate the two. "The bill of the Purple Finch is conical shaped whereas the upper mandible of the House Finch is curved downward."
Looking closely at my picture, the upper mandible curves down- you were correct! I've been mislabeling these little finches for years. Message edited by author 2012-04-04 22:56:38. |
