As for the photo, I don't think there should be any white space. You could have resized the photos to take up the entire space which would be more visually appealing.

This is a great image of the baby enjoying a frosty A&W Root Beer. I think the key to the challenge was to create a dynamic image which would involve movement. This image is more static. Also the subject seems to be centered in the frame and doesn't appear to be entering or leaving the frame.

A web of treasure

Great Depth of Field. The background is very simple going from green to grey which helps to highlight the complexity of the web. That works to create that wow effect! There doesn't seem to be anything in focus, whether by design or not, I don't know. I find that to be a shortfall in this picture. I would like to see the spider in focus.
