Awarded for the October 2013 Free Study, for the reasons identified below.

This image has caused me to stop and pay attention. That means it is in my 7-10 voting band. (Voted earlier)

Additionally, it is highly interesting/eclectic meaning it keeps me here long enough to offer a longer comment and a vote of 8 or more.

This is my only 10 - I like it very much. Furthermore I think it enriches the DPC collective portfolio. Put simply, I wish we saw more stuff like this. Let me tell you why it pushes all the right buttons for me:

1. You've engaged me thoroughly - it normally takes some people in an image to do that for me, but here you've created something to stop me in my tracks and appreciate the quality.

2. The quality of the post processing is stunning - so utterly well judged - so use of glow especially.

3. The composition, brilliant enough for me to ignore the clipped top of the tree on the left. The perception of depth as we are drawn from the foreground fronds and reflections to the power of the waterfalls behind. This, coupled with the massive presence of the red mill - tremendous.

4. The colours - the subtleness of most of the scene juxtaposed with the dramatically coloured mill works very well indeed.

5. The low POV and how that accentuates a sense of depth.

Overall, I can't overlook the flat-out masterfulness of this image. Not my usual pickings but quality like this can't be ignored. Looking forward to see who's this is. I once saw a landscape of Sandy's that left a similar impression but we'll see...

1. The pan-generational contrast between your dad and daughter.
2. The magic trick of having got this depth of field indoors in natural light.
3. The implicit presence of the TV.
4. The fantastic placement of the mug - domesticating the context so thoroughly.
5. The light, especially how it plays across your dad's face.
6. The overall documentary feel of the image.

Clive, this is superb.

This is one of my 8s - I like it. Furthermore I think it enriches the DPC collective portfolio. Put simply, I wish we saw more stuff like this. Let me tell you why it pushes all the right buttons for me:

1. The cinematic feel this has.
2. The centrality of the flare to the composition and impact of the image.
3. The green hue.
4. The mystery of the figures.
5. The red 'painting' of the coat (top-right) by the sun.

So interesting.

This is one of my 9s - I like it a lot. Furthermore I think it enriches the DPC collective portfolio. Put simply, I wish we saw more stuff like this. Let me tell you why it pushes all the right buttons for me:

1. In-your-face vibrancy without being overkill.
2. A sense of a moment captured - the fleeting frozen.
3. The speed with which in brings a smile to the face.
4. The communication of a sense of warmth - makes me want to walk into the picture.
5. The low POV.
6. The quirky character.

A feel-good photo.

1. Bold-as-you-like posing.
2. It's superbly lit and exposed.
3. The softness of the artefacts.
4. The oddness of the scene.

I like unusual portraits - and this is a great one.

1. The zigzag composition.
2. The dramatic tones.
3. The fearlessness of your shadows - I'm never brave enough to leave such pools of black in my images.
4. The sense of brightness, despite the darkish rendition.
4. The spacing of your subjects within the Z axis and the ambiguity of their relationship.

Overall, a great brooding shot.
