GOALby HighNoonerComment: I'm going through the entries, stopping at those images I feel have had the benefit of an unconventional eye and dwelling a little longer to try to see and appreciate what you saw. This is one of those images.
Positives: The overall effect here is like one of finger painting - I like that; it creates its own abstraction without compromising the integrity of the scene. Quite Turner-esque in that regard. The stoic man in the centre is fundamental to the success of the image, we wonder why he is unmoved by the goal; a home team fan who couldn't get a ticket in another part of the stadium?? I can see how it might have been tempting to go monochrome with this but for me, the colour rendition has proved to be an outstanding choice.
Critical stuff: No
Overall: very well crafted image. Much harder than it looks I suggest. |

Living?by jomariComment: I'm going through the entries, stopping at those images I feel have had the benefit of an unconventional eye and dwelling a little longer to try to see and appreciate what you saw. This is one of those images.
Positives: I do like the swirly blur here - it makes me feel that I am somewhat out of phase with the world I am seeing. I think that's an accomplishment to shift the sense of blur and movement away from the subject and onto us. I'm particularly fond of the building behind and the hints of the wider world so revealed.
Critical stuff: For all of the comments above, I do feel that the image is ever so slightly over-contrived. I often like that, it communicates the photographers intent but here, there seems to be something a little lacking.... Like you don't quite believe in the image. That sounds like nonsense as I read it back - but that's how I feel.
Overall: A well executed image with some fascination but for me - the more I look at it, the more hollow it feels. I wonder if I looked for longer it would turn me again... |

Positives: And I thought I'd already found the bvy image! Although I can see this as paper on the ground, the overall effect is one of a discovered crime scene... A body barely covered along the edge of a path. The impression you have created here imbues the image with real power. The Sycamore pod is really important too - it shows us the scale of the image yet my mind refuses to accept the smallness of the face. That dichotomy fascinates.
Critical stuff: I can't think of anything that could be changed... It would be wrong to disturb the scene!
Overall: Excellent story telling. |

under the rainbowby nixterComment: I'm going through the entries, stopping at those images I feel have had the benefit of an unconventional eye and dwelling a little longer to try to see and appreciate what you saw. This is one of those images.
Positives: Blur done beautifully. So evocative that I can almost hear footsteps on stone. The silhouette and shadow are beautifully captured too; the composition is bang on and the overall sense of movement is captivating.
Critical stuff: No
Overall: I wish I did more work like this... |

Drool.by RKTComment: I'm going through the entries, stopping at those images I feel have had the benefit of an unconventional eye and dwelling a little longer to try to see and appreciate what you saw. This is one of those images.
Positives: Fabulous contrasts, I really like how the light turns the liquid so white in the image. I like the joints between the slabs and how the drain works as a primer for the image, allowing us to orientated ourselves and make sense of the scene.
Critical stuff: I've said it before but I do believe these sorts of images (one of Brian's?) have a fixed ceiling of interest. I do like the way you can often be found dancing on that ceiling though.
Overall: Very nicely made image that squeezes every last drop of interest from the scene. |

Silver and Goldby tangueraComment: I'm going through the entries, stopping at those images I feel have had the benefit of an unconventional eye and dwelling a little longer to try to see and appreciate what you saw. This is one of those images.
Positives: What a marvellous portrait. The light, the opulence of the surroundings, the dress, the pose, the aloof dog - all contribute to a really effective image. Everything goes together so wonderfully. I particularly like the blown curtain - it adds dynamism to a quite still image.
Critical stuff: I think eye contact may have worked really well to anchor the viewers eye.
Overall: I am a fan of good portraits and this is right up there. |
