Oh, I see, a new challenge.
Basically, a shallow depth of field challenge, with a lens which makes the out of focus background appealling, and that background and shallow depth of field enhancing the image.

| This should be a great challenge. It leaves everyone a great deal of lattitude inpresenting their favorite subject. Can't wait to get started. |

Think of a photo where the subject's appeal is enhanced by the qualities (color, shape, etc.) of the out-of-focus background (and/or foreground) of the image. Portraiture is an especially fruitful area for this.

bokeh is essentially the nature of the out of focus background. people often refer to 'good bokeh' as soft, well-balanced spots that are round or near-round in nature. 'bad bokeh' is usually hard, has many sides (if you shoot wide open, you should have round bokeh) and may be overpowering or weak. i've never pursued the topic much, but i'm sure you can find a lot if you do some searches. the effects can really be great at times.
edit: wow, so many responses since i started typing my response. i don't see any bokeh in the above post, though. pretty un-bokeh-ish if you ask me :p

| this may sound stupid, but just clarifying... so the subject should be in focus and the foreground should be in focus as well but the background should be blurred? |

click on the pic above to see it fullsize - the background is the bokeh part.
in this example, the players are the center of attention, the background out of focus helps draw your attention to the players.
This will be my first entry with my rebel...assuming i get it on time. My Fuji can only produce acceptable bokeh in macro mode.

Just to continue my paranoia about my 70-200, is it possible for the lens to appear to be working properly but have what looks like bad bokeh? I have a few shots where the oof areas look terrible. Can't post any examples now, will do tomorrow. More curious than anything b/c I bought the lens partly for its supposed awesome bokeh.

Woo hoo free study! Time to whip out my Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS which produces beautiful Bokeh!

Better than my S414 but same hopfuly if i get the d70 in time frist entry with it as my main gun.

Loosely defined, bokeh is the quality and "feel" of the out-of-focus foreground and background elements of a photo.
I think this is going to cause a lot of hammering LOL
