Here is my situation:

I recently was awarded a very nice sales incentive here at work in amount of $1,000USD to use on a website that offers pretty much anything under the sun. When I heard I was in the running for the prize I went to the website and there it was...the 10D for $1,449. Using the prize I would be paying essentially $500 for a 10D. AMAZING DEAL! But now that I have the prize in hand the camera is gone. :( However, the 300D is there for the taking for $999USD ...essentially free!!!

So here is my question, should I just grab the 300D for "free" or wait some more time to find out what is on the horizon (10DMk2)? Keep in mind that I currently use a Fuji FinePix S602 right now and have no experience with DSLR (no glass at all) but I also like to do things right the first time and don't want to sell myself short.

What would you do in my position?

How long does the $1000 voucher last?
Can you put in a "reserve" on the next 10D that comes up...
Do they have the Nikon D70 and would that be a good alternative?
Which is the camera you want above all others?

I got a free 300D and haven't regretted it at all :)

Based on all the research I've done I'm pretty much stuck on Canon. The 10DMK2 is what I really want but it's pretty much just rumor for the time being. If I knew if/when it was coming out I would feel better about waiting. I technically have a year to use the certificate but I've already waited amost a year to even make this decision. I guess I'm just anxious.

well even if you did use it on the mark 2, the mark 2 costs like 4500 dollars. that still leaves you with a 3500 dollar bill, plus glass.

I believe that you are thinking of the wrong camera. The 1DMK2 (I think) costs that much. The next version of the 10D is what I'm referring to. There are rumors that it is due in a couple of months or as late as September but they are just rumors at the moment. The price point should be below $2,000USD.

How much do you think that you will be needing the additional things that the 10D has over the 300D?
For my short experience I find the 300D a great camera and under most circumstances the 10D has nothing extra that I need but of cours it has some more features and more buffer capacity.
And as Kavey says, look if there is any D70 there.
And remember that thou you get the camera free then there is the glass and accesories and that can be very expensive.

haha, no worries.

Garlic,

I know what you mean about the added features not amounting to much but I think they are important ones. The buffer in the 300D isn't even an issue for me. It's the limited metering, limited White balance controls and plastic construction that have me debating. The reason I'm considering it in the first place is because I'm new to DSLR's anyway, and heck.....you can't beat free!

P.S. I haven't seen the D70 listed.

Yes, I know the D70 is fairly new but they just don't have it listed. Don't know why.

Can you write or phone and ask what they are likely to get listed or ask if they are able to stock according to advance orders and if so how much they'd sell it for.

Ditto for the 10D - can you ask them to get one into stock for you?

Is there someplace I can read about the possible 10DMK2? I've saved enough money for the 300D, but am not so sure I want that now. Especially, with the sub $1000 USD 8 megapixel P&S cameras on the market now. Six megapixel seems sort of obsolete.

It is certain that there will be a Canon camera, in that space, to replace the 10D, at some point (unless the company goes out of business)

However, they haven't announced anything yet. If they do, it won't actually be available for about 6 months after that date, if not longer,

So basically, your question is a 300D now, or a camera that might be available in January at the earliest ?

Good idea. But I don't think that will work. The site is: //www.giveanytning.com and they basically partner up with hundreds of sites that are willing to accept their gift checks. The only place I can find the decent cameras is at Electronics Suportstore and the selection is limited.

Faidoi...thanks for the link, I'll read up on that.

Well, although they are just rumors at the moment there is plenty of information running around DPReview about the specs. And not just from wish lists but from the same person that gave the specs on the 300D months before anyone even heard about it. And the "rumors" state a June release. But you can take the rumors for what they're worth.

I never see anyone mention the Pentax *1stD (DSLR). Was just looking at it at dpreview and it seems to be a decent camera. Does anyone know anything about Pentax glass or compatilbe? It seem to be slightly more expensive than the 300D and D70 and also it seems strange how huges the RAW-files are, othervise it seems a fine camera.

There's no point having 8mp if the image quality isn't up to scratch.

Quality of an camera isnĀ“t about how many megapix are included.

That's exactly why I decided on Canon's CMOS sensor.
04/27/2004 06:10:03 PM · #22
I think I'd choose the 300D and spend the difference on lenses and accesories. Never had a DSLR and maybe I'm wrong but I learned from this forum and others that they ain't worth without atleast a couple of extra good lenses.
04/27/2004 08:13:51 PM · #23
Maybe you could come at this from another angle...that is...if you've already decided to go with Canon, why don't you just purchase $1000 worth of Canon lenses now and wait on the body for later. You could purchase a really good L-lens and maybe one more like the standard 50mm 1.8. Then you could wait on the new 10D to come out.

That's the way I do things...ass backwards...lol...just a thought.

Wait for 10D Mark II

After much debate, I decided to get the 300D and use the money that would have gone to the 10D and am going to get some lenses. Thanks for the advice everyone. Maybe I can get it in time to use it for the next challenge. We'll see. Thanks again.
