But you fail to consider an alternate interpretation, namely that if many voters failed to see a connection to the challenge, the *photographer* must take at least some if not most of the responsibility.
It's true that some voters are draconian and must be presented with an obvious tie to the challenge. Others are arguably much more open. The better a photographer makes the tie-in to the challenge, the more "points" (s)he will garner from the more persnickety ones. Complaining about differences in people's voting style is fruitless.

...Yes, but sadly discussion of any topic requires a level of open mindedness from all of the parties involved, which does not seem to prevail in situations such as this.

The worst and most irrelevant thing (not to mention frustrating, unproductive and useless) when you do any form of art is to go and take by the scruff of the neck people who threw rotten eggs at your piece. Or plainly ask them why they don't like your art or simply ignore it.

Just keep doing what you do and sift comments accordingly.

BTW, I gave your shot a 6. Good but did not get enthusiastic about it. Since I did not think to leave a comment then, I will not elaborate more now.

I didn't vote, but would have voted it a 5.
I have ZERO problem with nudity, so that is NOT the problem for me.

I see a bunch of stuff that doesn't appeal to me (most has been mentioned before) such as the bright highlights. I also see that the photo appears to be on a slight lean (something I generally regard as sloppy, not artistic).

The subject is centered and looks just sort of ...... "plopped" there.
The lack of eye contact is a big one for me.... it doesn't appeal to me to feel so distanced, even though she seems to be looking straight at me.

Just because the lighting is "exotic", i.e. different, doesn't mean it is brilliant.
I see harsh contrasts, rather than lighting that is artfully arranged to achieve an effect/mood.

Lovely breasts, lovely nipples, possibly a lovely girl overall, but I don't care very much for the photo.

I agree with both Johanna and Paul. :)

Johanna's right. :)

It's a challenge. There's a purpose for the description

Paul is right. :)
"The DPC challenge themes leave some room for interpretation. It says take a portrait or a still life, or use red as the main colour, or something similarly dull. Yet people still say, "A park bench isn't a still life - DNMC", or "A portrait must show the eyes - DNMC", or "That's not red, it's only crimson-tinted orange - DNMC". "

There is room for interpretation. You should have an open mind. The fun is trying to figure out how it meets the challenge, imo.

However. If someone takes a picture of a kiwi and submits it into a "totally purple" challenge -- nope, no, nuh-uh. I really do try to look beyond, but I refuse to pander to the people who purposely try to ignore the challenge topic. Out of the box is good. Way out of the box can be interesting. Ignoring the fact that the box even exists is where I draw the line.

That being said, I didn't vote on portrait, but I would have given it a 5. Nudes don't do anything for me. I don't vote them down, but you have to really impress me for me to vote it up.

Yes -- I think it's a portrait.

Other than that, I find the center of it interesting, but I have a problem with the surroundings. I like the idea, but it doesn't add, imo, it just comes off cluttered and busy. I'd almost like either the left and center, and crop off the right, or right and center and crop left. That much extra seems overwhelming. There's more that I would have done to it, but you get the general idea.

I didn't vote this challenge, probably would have given it either a five or six. When I first looked at it, it took me a few seconds to take it in. I (and most I would guess) just take a short time to place a vote, only the best or worst shots make me slow down and study a shot longer. I guess it wouldn't have made me stop and study longer. As for fitting the challenge, not a perfect fit. I do downgrade for that sometimes but would not have on this one because it sort of fit. It's a nice shot.

Commenters votes are usually a point or two higher than the average on even the winners

As for nudes, I always it funny that the number of views is always much higher than the others. :)

I don't think your picture elicited very strong reactions as you can see a nice bell curve to your scores. I found the picture a bit distracting in its composition.
