Update (September 20th 2009)
After living near Seattle for 7 1/2 years, we are now relocating back to Brisbane, Australia.
I have mixed feelings about that move. After all those years, Washington is very much home to us, and there is a lot that I love about it.
On the other hand, there is also very much to love about Brisbane - except for the horrid heat which I hate with a passion!
We are currently working on fixing up our house which the tenants did their best to destroy. We're due to move back in next week, and then we'll renovate the kitchen, bathroom, etc. Lots of work ahead, so I doubt I'll have much time for DPC for a while.
Behave yourselves, play nicely, and give me the odd "interesting" forum thread to read for when I DO have a bit of time :-)
My voting philosophy:
I like to start at 5. If a photo is adequate, technically acceptable, on topic but basic and uninspired, it gets a 5.
If I must, I deduct points for flaws. It is very rare (but does happen) that a photo deserves a 1.
On the other hand, I also add points for interest, appeal, technical difficulty/mastery, imagination, humor etc etc etc. 10's are rare, but they do happen also.
I try not to let any personal hang-ups influence my judgment of a photo, e.g. I'd do my best to judge the quality of your macro of a cockroach (something I hate with a passion), even if it IS making my stomach do flip flops. However, there is a limit to that - some basic conventions need to be observed to be considered in good taste.... I won't put up with EVERYTHING!
I aim to be fair, but it is impossible to completely avoid personal preference, that's just the way it works.
Competing around here is tough - the overall quality of work is so impressive.
Sometimes I remind myself that my rather so-so average is, after all, average of a wonderfully talented collection!
I'm no expert, but if I can help with something related to photography or post processing, send me a pm - I enjoy teaching.
