Biography: |
Born to Diana and Robert C. Saunders, II in Gulfport, Mississippi, Leah Saunders has been carrying the camera since the age of 12 to visit 13 of the United States as well as France and Switzerland. Her father was a ceramic artist and painter from Nassau, Bahamas as well as a Kempo karate master. He trained Leah in this art of skill and meditation before his death at 39 from heart complications. He never wore shoes to always feel the earth and connect for inspiration. Her mother is an artist and never used cameras but instead sketched and painted the children, as she was a homemaker who was raised in Findlay, Ohio by German and French-Jewish parents. Leah has five siblings, one son, and dreams that click and inspire like her Canon.
Leah Saunders is a self-taught photographer who studied Communication and French at the University of Cincinnati as well as training in classical ballet and modern dance at several schools during her travels. In her journey of different cultural experiences and languages, the camera was never turned off as she began to head in a different direction by leaving campus. For Leah, this was just another way to amplify life. She never fears change or the unknown. She states, âThe clicks in my mind or within my camera are all the same, I think I have one thing but itâs really another after I step back and see what I have.â
In her work, Leah constantly revisits the constructionist viewpoint of Communication Theory, which considers how social phenomena develop in particular social contexts. Polish poet and essayist, Wislava Szymborska, who illuminates philosophical themes and obsessions, also inspires the artist. The soulful poetry inspires her to focus and embrace the condition of people both as individuals and as members of human society. Other influences include Simone Beauvoir, Anna Atkins, and Mary Upjohn Meader.
In her recent works, Leah introduces us to the Light Language of ancient Mayan culture.
This healing technique of the Curanderos (Master Healers) of Mexico is a spiritual evolution based upon ancient Mayan wisdom.
The artist explores this culture with her only child, Olivier, who is of Mayan ancestry. She was first introduced to this technique after she was diagnosed with a painful disease, Endometriosis, which affects millions of young women every day. After meditating in a yoga class, she became friends with a Master Worker of the Light Language who encouraged her to manage her pain in a natural way through this technique. She realizes the teachings of her inspiration, Starr Fuentes who said, âIf we change what is in the higher bodies, the lower bodies will change to resonate with the energies that are coming from above.â Leah embraces the teachings of Light Language that correlate with her passion for photography, another âLight Languageâ that she discovered at the age of 12 after the death of her father. She joined a photography club after lifelong mentor, Mr. Bruce Green, encouraged her to heal through writing poetry and using a camera to record what was still alive and dancing. Therefore, Leah began to dance with the camera.
Leah states, âI use photography as a means of healing and reconciling the mind with the body. I hope to inspire others to heal through shifting light and dancing with it to create a peaceful state of mind. My intention is to explore processes of healing as well as processes of taking photographs of natural shapes, refractions of light and graceful forms. I am interested in the tension and harmony between forms and light.â
As a child advocate foremost, she states, âAs an artist and mother, I believe lifeâs poignant moments emanate from the balance achieved when âLight Languageâ is heard amidst the chaotic lives we live. Children are messengers of this light and listening to them and allowing them to fully express themselves helps them prepare for their roles as healers.â
How deeply is the artist connected with her work? She states, âIt is my belief that as the light of my emotions affects how I capture images, it also affects even the blades of grass or people I record. If we envision ourselves as catchers of light waves, we can imagine and strive to control how we emanate and amplify our light back into time and space.â
Please join Leah Saunders, photographer of life amplification, in illumination of minds and healing of hearts.
