So -- the image is just like one that i remember from many years ago when i first joined DPC. Author of the original is Guarawa. His was perfect for the challenge he entered it in, mine was just a feeble attempt to do smoke and matches shots and a shoehorn. Had it been original with me i would have been happy with the image and i actually think it lines up well with the symbolic aspect of the book/movie.

Thanks for voting and comments. It was good practice - thanks Guarawa for the initial shot which has been in my head for several years now.

It took me a while to figure this out. Like it! Maybe tighter crop on the "old men?"

I really like the image a lot. There is a strong impact in the way the matchsticks are distributed evenly and yet unequal...
The smoke does not seem to be created from the sticks anyway it is one of my top scores.

The technicals of the image are great - the lighting on the burned out matches is spot on and the blue smoke with detail in the swirls is visually captivating. One can infer some symbology of the shot and just the title. The passing of the old to ruin and decay. The lifespan of humans (as represented by the matches) is short and we burn out. All goes up in smoke. When the lights burn out the darkness will come - hope fades to smoke and ashes. I have not read the book so I have to trust that strength lies more in the symbolic connection to 'good vs evil' in the content of the book rather than a literal representation of the book itself. The 'country' being the darkness or the place that is hidden in the darkness rather than the setting of the book - border Texas.

This will probably do very well since it's a very well-taken shot and well-composed, I do like it and appreciate the quality of the image; however, it don't fit the title for me personally, I see no obvious connection between blown out matches and the title of that book.

Beautiful image. Not getting the relationship to the title, but there is a longing to this picture
