 Oops - forgot to put in the settings I used. I've fixed that up now and you're right, I wasn't using the 17-40, I was using the 70-200.

I've received comments to say 'crop in more' and I agree with that...now! I guess I'm still a little wary of the crop button! (I have a habit of leaving extra space on the sides for framing purposes...)

Love the intensity on their faces and the fact we can see the ball. I think cropping these shots down to focus on the action and leaving the 'standing around guys' out of the frame would help the energy level of the shots.

A question for you...what lens and settings are you using for these shots? It says the 17-40mm was used but I wonder if that is just your default lens on your profile. If you notice most sports pro shooters and their shots - the background is blurred out much more due to the use of a shallow DOF by using a longer lens.
