good to make such an attractive image out of such a simple, unattractive, subject. I like the shallow DOF and composition. I don't know what the darker brown bits are, if possible I would have removed them.
The narrow DOF makes the red spikes seem delicate rather than threatening. You could create a bit more contract by boosting the saturation a bit - the red and green will contrast nicely. Perhaps a bit of buri=ning to emphasize the shadows and structure. I like your close composition and how it shows the structure of the plant. I would crop in both on the right and top to loose that piece of ground in the corner. This should put the center of the plant more on the "thirds line" which would make a more dynamic shape.
