This is the Clothespin Tree in the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias in Yosemite National Park. It's trunk has had a vertical hole burned into it from fires that were either natural or prescribed over the years. The blackened cavity is the heartwood dry-rotted under repeated hot fires. The reddish brown colour of the bark is due to a chemical called tannin, which resists insects, fungi and minor fires.

This was the only "wow" photo I really found with plants in it from my trip to Yosemite this past week. I'm afraid that the overexposed area will hurt me, but oh well.

Editing: Crop, Instant Photo Fix, Saturation + 17, Resize, USM.

Blow out in the gap, if you have it use your spot next time.

the sky is completely blown out from overexposure. try using a flash to bring the exposure of the tree so it can match that of the sky. interesting angle.

I see what you are trying to do and it's an innovative and creative idea. It's a nice releif from the flowers. However the blown out reflection at the bottom detracts from an otherwise worthy ribbon contender.
