The quote on the iPad is from Steve Jobs' famous Stanford speech, where he quoted the back cover of the Whole Earth catalog. As soon as I got back from shooting this, I realized I got it backwards :( It's "Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish."
I had a lot of fun shooting this, but it was a lot of work. I dragged all of my gear (Vagabond Lithium Mini, AlienBees B1600 light, large octabox, light stand, camera bag, tripod, and 30-40 apples) by myself along this long rock breakwater on the coast, set up my apples, watched almost half of them roll into the cracks between the rocks, and started shooting. I found out about 12 shots into this that I hadn't charged my Vagabond Mini, but at that point I was too tired to care. I got a decent shot, and after some moderate PP, I like how it turned out. I left the apples as a snack for the seagulls :)
My vision for this shot was a funeral procession, with the green apples pallbearing, and the red apples following. I wanted to do this on a deserted road, but my wife would have killed me if a car came out of nowhere and ran over her iPad, so I decided a beach location would be less dangerous. This was also my first shoot outdoors with my big lighting setup, and while I screwed up a lot of details, I learned a lot on this one, so I'm pretty pumped to go out and try it again! |
