The title was inspired by one of my favorite reads in recent years: Metropole, by Hungarian author Ferenc Karinthy. The story was written around 1970 and only recently translated into English. "A Kafkaesque tale of a hapless narrator stranded on the top floor of the figurative Tower of Babel" is how one Amazon.com reviewer sums it up. I can't describe it any better in any fewer words. It's a tedious thriller, as relevant today as ever.

Several months ago, I discovered this interesting patch of concrete near the Allegheny County Jail. It's under a bridge and poorly lit. Framing it was a challenge too. But I knew there was a stifling metropolis to be found in those accidental rusty patterns -- not unlike the one depicted in the story. I was happy that this challenge gave me the opportunity to get the image I'd had in mind for a while now.

I see Babellian Edifici everywhere herein. A comment on the current passe created by a highly evolved generation of financi viperi? - Sorry, I really wanted to express this in Hungarian. (I will try to get hold of Metropole; tedious thrillers have become quite the genre it seems).

How wonderful to settle something down that has been floating around in the head.
