 A bull elk grazes the new grass in the meadow near Glacier Creek. Snow still clings to the continental divide.

Sepia toning is valuable for this scene because the monochrome conceals the red, dead trees in the valley. The pine bark beetle has killed many trees and wrecked the beauty of this colorful Colorado scene. The sepia toning reduces the distraction.

This bull elk was 6' tall at the shoulder. He is currently a 6x6, but will likely be a 7x7 or an 8x8 by the time his antlers stop growing in August. This is the velvet stage. I think he weighed about 800#.

Silver Efex Pro 2.

There's a reason Ansel Adams never included wildlife in his landscape images. To achieve a full depth of field from the foreground to infinity, the aperture size needs to be fairly small. In this case, I used f/18. That slowed the shutter speed to 1/50s to properly expose the scene. With a tripod, a sharp image can be accomplished, but it's on the edge. The big elk paused just enough to get the wildlife into the landscape scene AND be in focus.

This is a sepia toned image. To have added more sepia color... saturation or intensity... would have created a distracting element. I'll always choose the subtle approach.

I think some people need to calibrate their monitors, as this is a sepia toned image. If they are seeing only shades of gray, it's their monitor.

OR, it could be my monitor. At any rate, I could have punched the sepia tone so everyone could see it. But, anything beyond the sepia tone I used looks terrible to me. Here are the sepia and the grayscale side-by-side. It's a dramatic difference on my monitor. I have no idea why good people are not seeing the difference.

This easily looks Sepia to me, but if I untick the calibration button it looks slightly less sepia, maybe wherein lies the problem, other than that it's a fine capture and the background, well that's just stunning.

Richard, I thought this was great and I'm with you, less is more! I gave this an 8 and it is definitely sepia toned on my monitor (iMac). Sorry it didn't do better

No it's sepia for sure. I don't get their comments. At first I thought moose looked soft, but I can't even see how I thought that. I think the whole thing is nice and focused and clear. Thanks for the explanation of the shot!

Clear and nice tones. Even though taken at midday it does not look to have harsh light. May not be enough sepia for the challenge though.

Nice subtle sepia tones and framing. The sky is a wonderful, rich dark tone. I take that back, the moose looks fine. :-D

I'm guessing this is Richard Hahn. If not, take it as a major compliment that I'm guessing that :)

I really really enjoy this photo. But I'm finding it very hard to see any sepia toning. To ensure that it's not just my monitor, I used an eye dropper tool to look at many samples from this image. All I'm getting is various shades of grey :-/
